I was wondering if ? My husband went into the service in 1972 he did not finish basic training , they let him out for medical reasons . I have his discharge papers , would be he intitled to any benifits ? V.A.? is he intitle to any basic benifits? I know ierd question. He was in the National Guard.

    General eligibility
Hello zinniemay. The general VA eligibility rule is that the veteran must have been discharged from active military service other than from active duty for training. It appears that your husband may not qualify, but there is no harm in checking. There should be a VA or a state office of veterans affairs in your area.

I do not know what the rules are but was your husband medically discharged with a pension from the Army?

I asked my husband he said he was in long enought to get a V.A. card but he is not sure it is any good. He got a medical honorable discharge.

    Zinniemay,

Your husband was in the Guard and they also are basically ruled by the State and not Federal. As Hawvet mentioned, he may not qualify for some benefits, but because he was released from his basic training due to a medical problem/ injury. He still may qualify for some basic care through the VA. If he has/had a VA card once, he is more than likely to still be listed in the system. I've heard of this happening several times with some older Vets that forgot about their VA cards.

Again, as Hawvet mentioned, he will need to either go to the local VA or a Veterans Affairs Office near you to get a decision as to whether he is indeed able to get the basic health care. He might qualify for the priority 8 level at the minimum.

Here is a link for you to copy and paste into the address on your browser to look around the va.gov site.

Hope this is of some help to you.

I met my husband when he was in the service. If he had not went in we would have never met! Have always wondered about it. He always said no he was not entitled to any V.A. benifits. He only served 21 weeks (1972-1973) USAARMC . He was honorable discharge. Doesn't matter I want to keep him ! Just wondering.
