my husband was told he has stage 4 brain cancer 5 weeks ago

I am having a hard time dealing with this and I do not know what to expect. I am hoping he will survive for a while. He has had 10 treatments of radiation and he is going to have another scan in july to see if the treatments helped. he is at home but he has to use a walker. will he be able to walk normally. This all came up as a surprise. He was not feeling well so I made him go to ER and in a hour the ER doctor came to me and told me he had brain cancer. Last june 26, 2009 he had his bladder and prostate removed. He was back to work in 6 weeks after that surgery. No one told us he could get brain after this. He was fine all year and now this . please give me some advice

    Sorry you have to go through this
    It's very frightening. My wife was diagnosed with multiple lesions in her brain in April, as a result of breast cancer metastasis. She just completed five treatments of whole brain radiation and is now recovering. The hardest thing so far has been the steroid they gave her to reduce the brain swelling, which had side effects of making her have periods of becoming very aggressive and acting like a lunatic. Fortunately, she came off the medication this week. I am concerned though that the doctors are not offering her any additional treatment.

    Dear JOhn,
    I usually stay on the breast cancer link but you have been on my mind and in my prayers and wanted to ask how you are doing and also how your wife and mother are doing? I see your posts about your wife but have not seen any info on your mother. Also are they not recommending any further treatment on your wife after the 5 they have already done and if not then what are they saying her prognosis is? Are you meeting with some other spouses of cancer patients and caregivers to get some support for yourself also? You really do need that for yourself. There is strength in numbers...remember that....we are not strong enough within ourselves either...we have to look to God for His strength that is infinite. Please keep me posted and may God bless and keep you strong and courageous!

    Thanks for asking -- my wife is recovering from the brain radiation still and I am glad that they have weaned her off that steroid-dexamethasone-which was so radically affecting her behavior. The next step is to wait until she has another scan to see if the radiation was effective. And my mother continues to do well also, on arimidex now. Sadly, leaving on Monday to go to my aunt's funeral, who was battling breast cancer for 13 years until she passed away yesterday.

    Dear John,
    I am glad you are hanging in there and that everyone is doing better. When does your wife go back for another scan? So your mother is done with her treatments and is on Arimeidex. How long does she have to take it and what is her prognosis? Sorry to hear about your Aunt. You must have a history of cancer then in your family so your mom has to be proactive. As so many other women have said on this site....if you have a gut feeling that something is wrong, continue to tell your doctor until they find out what it is and if they don't then go to get a second opinion. After getting cancer once this is a must. I pray that your mom and wife continue to get stronger and that they will be healed in their bodies as I do all of us on this site.
