Ed got bad news today!!!!

Ed was having difficulty with his balace this week walking along with severe headaches off and on, went to er this morning, got admitted, had ct scan of head, came back with 1" tumor in his brain, the cerebellum part, the back of his head. the doctor is doing an mri in the morning and we have a consult with his oncologist. this is very very bad news for us, we are so sad and scared. The doctor on call said it would be dealt with either surgery or radiaton. Has anyone ever had mets to the brain and if so, did you do radiation, and if so, what can we expect from radiation. I know he will be stopping his chemo for now but I am so concerned about him having these balance issues, having difficulty walking, etc., along with these headaches. they put him on steiroids hoping to help the swelling in his brain, is this common. Please, anyone who knows anything about this, please write to me asap so I can have some informaton on hand before this meeting tomorrow.

My mom has SCLC w/mets to brain. She had 20 scattered tumors therefore surgery was not an option, only Whole Brain Radiation. The steriods are very common and needed. This will reduce the swelling as help with the balance issues. (mom had balance and speech issues) They will perhaps put him on anti-seizure meds as well for a precaution since the brain is involved.

Sounds like Ed will be able to get the pin point radiation, which will be much easier than the WBR.

My aunt had lung cancer with mets to brain. She was on steroids which relieved a lot of the pressure. I know this is a completely different than your situation, but I know the steroids did help her a lot. She had surgery, radiation and chemo. She's a two year survivor and in remission. Her tumor was located behind her ear.

In fact, her story gives me strength especially now when my dad is going through his EC fight.

She beat the odds and I know others can too! I'll be thinking of both of you and sending positive thoughts your way.

my dad just went through it
My dad had one met in the brain. The same exact place and the same symptoms. He had emergency brain surgery to remove it and then they followed up with radiation (not whole head). We are now 3 weeks out from radiation. He was really nauseus during radiation and for a couple weeks after but Zofran helped. But his balance and coordination and his speech were better right after the surgery. He went home two days after surgery. Keep in mind this was 3 weeks after his ivor lewis esophagectomy. So I think he's done pretty well.

Oh Linda yet another bump in this journey! Well....pull up those boot straps and keep going on strong! Get the mri, get the results, and do what is best.
