Don't give up on that
Sounds like there are some legitimate adjustments that might be needed for massage therapy and the cancer patient but by no means does it sound like it's out of the question.
Here's an article http://www.massageandbodywork.com/Articles/JuneJuly2005/Bodywork.html
(just select the link and right click, go down to search the web for....).
We've got massage therapists on staff. Let me ask some quesitons on Monday and I'll let you know what they say.
I'm guessing your massage therapist just doesn't have the experience and is possibly afraid.0 -

Actually, I do recall reading an article about alternative therapies that are "not recommended" for people undergoing active cancer treatment, and massage was one of the treatments listed. I will see if I can track down the article.

Massage
Hi Irish! I feel your pain! I am now 6 months clean Pet, and after 3 months clean Pet I HAVE had a had light tissue massage & Reiki. I explained the situation prior to the massage. THAT, & the fact that I had NO deep tissue - losing 30+ lbs, no problem! There was no deep tissue! I read the article in the previous post, and I would go on the side of caution. This to shall pass Irish! God bless, and as for the significant other, that is a whole 'nother post! Hee Hee!0 -

Hi Charles,
I am a big massage fan. I have had back problems fro years and started treatment when my back was 'out' so I endured an additional burden, as when my back is out, so is my stomach. What I did get was some Physio at the hospital, which helped a little. not as good the FBM but you may inquire at the centre where you treatments are done.
Hang in there.

Massage
Find another place if you can. I thought massages were suppose to promote healing. My husband got massages throughout his treatment and it made him feel sooooo much better. Good luck.0 -

Safe and Effective Massage for Cancer Patients
Massage is safe and effective for a cancer patient at any stage of the journey, but only if it is performed by a properly trained and experienced therapist.
The Society for Oncology Massage is the definitive resource on this issue. Its members are massage therapists working in major cancer centers, oncology clinics and private practices.
Go to the Society's website and click on Therapist Locator to search for a member therapist in your area. (http://www.s4om.org)

Just found this information when Mark was in for radiation yesterday. Reiki is FREE to patients on Fridays...Mark declined...can't believe it. I am going to ask if the caregiver can step in if the patient doesn't want it.
Anyway here is what they say:
The National Institute of Health's National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) states on their website that, "People use Reiki for relaxation, stress reduction, and symptom relief in efforts to improve overall health and well-being. Reiki has been used by people with anxiety, chronic pain, HIV/AIDS, and other health conditions, as well as by people recovering from surgery or experiencing side effects from cancer treatments." http://nccam.nih.gov/health/reiki/#keypoints
The power of touch...
Hope you are hanging in...week 5?
Stay strong,
Kim0
