    Keeping my fingers and legs
Keeping my fingers and legs (LOL) Crossed for him! Hope he has great success like I did. Still have him drink the fluids but taper off around 5-6pm at night for a dry night. Also put down a pad on the bed just in case! I needed it one time for a minor night time leak. I found out that lemonade caused problems for me! That was my only bad leak.

    Sounds great! Tell him not
Sounds great! Tell him not to worry though if he has a slight leak from time to time. I had a few minor drips and can't remember when I had the last one now.

When he gets his first post surgery PSA of a 0 then go out and have dinner and celebrate being cancer free!

    Thanks Larry~~~

    I will tell him

and we will be waiting for that good report~~

This stuff can take some time, we figured up yesterday
that we have been dealing with it since late last year...
so it is really nice to be on the other side of the
    surgery etc......

second day and night w/out cath

Yeah a funny thing happened last night~

first of all let me back up and say that we went to
our fav mexican restaurant for lunch and we decided to
have a large diet coke (each)....first time in weeks...
well everything was fine until about 2 hours after we went
to bed and we woke up and the bed was half wet....ooopssss~~~
so we proceeded to put towels down and return to sleep....
dry rest of night...so I told Dencil to think about it
that it was possible that the carbonated drink had something
to do w/it...so I said , I think the plan should now be to
no more carbonated drinks for a time period....and stop the
drinking a few hours before bedtime...
because the first night was a completely dry night...
    just a few modifications , I say...
and to keep a diary of each day...
    anyways ....

    thats it for now...

hope all is going well with everyone~~

    and Hi to Larry~~~

For me personally I had no
For me personally I had no issues with whatever I drank. In the beginning I was up 2x a night for about a month then it has been and still is 1x a night and I am at 11 weeks today.

In the beginning I did not drink 2 hours before bed time and now I drink pretty much until I go to bed (water)…Anyway we all heal differently and we all will have our own unique journey… and again it sounds like he is doing great from the time the cath was pulled out…

    Carbonated drinks
More than the carbonated drink, per se, I think it is the caffeine in the drink. When incontinent, I quit coffee, alcohol, and diet cokes and my incontinence reduced immensely. Found if I drank Sprite instead of diet coke that the effect is much lessened. Hope this helps. Anyway, watch the effects of various agents on the degree of continence/incontinence.

    Carbonated drinks
I have had to abandon any idea of carbonated drinks. The three nights in my 30 weeks post DaVinci that I have had anything bubbly after 5pm have been guaranteed bed-wetters.

I will not make the absolute declaration that they are bad for everyone, but for me, it is a guaranteed trip to the washer at 2 am.

This includes beer, coke, sparkling wine - the small glass of bubbly on new years did me in - swam into the new year :(

I do not see the caffine as relevant to the carbonation, but it caffine in itself is a problem as well.

    Sounds like he is still
Sounds like he is still progessing nicely! Those are the little things that will get you the first few months. As others and you have found out....stop the drinks earlier...Stay away from Caffeine drinks in the evening...

Did the doctor give you a list of things to avoid? The list given me stated Spicy foods and some mexican can be spicy. I am back to eating mexican now with no problems at 10 months post surgery.

I've made major changes in my life as far as diet...Never thought I would do it but personally I have given up caffeine including coffee, no red meats...only eating fish and chicken in the meat area. No alcholol, eating more veggies and taking lots of different supplements. It must be working since my regular doctor just this week...Cut my cholestrol meds down and also my diabetic meds!

When we eat out I usually get water now. Again these are just personal things I'm doing to hopefully stay cancer free inspite of having the positive margin post.

    Larry, like you, diet is
Larry, like you, diet is extremely important along with exercise and positive thoughts. Obliviously I would prefer that this cancer beast stays away forever but like you I have a positive margin plus had SVI on the right side but the silver lining here with positive margins is that if our PSA every go up the cancer is typically local in the prostate bed instead of distance as statistics show for negative margins with reoccurrence…

In the mean time, eat right, exercise, keep being positive and enjoy life

    Thank You Friends~~~~

    Thank You , Larry, Bdhilton,Ob66,and 142

you all are so helpful!! I am learning so much from you all....
I think you all are so right , that each individual has to look
at what effects them and what to possibly watch out for....

Dencil will actually not drink water...(strange huh?) So he drinks
decaff tea and decaf coffee....and he drinks those little powder drinks
that you mix with water....but I hadnt thought of trying a carb drink
without caffene.....thank you for that idea..

Please help this ignorant woman understand what a "positive" margin
means????and how it affects your prognosis????

Oh and by the way...we had a "dry" night last night....It is really
wonderful that Dencil has such a great additude about all this...he
acted like it really didnt bother him that he had the wet night
wednesday night...and just kept believing that he would be fine~~
you know prayer is really a very important part of this...I truly
    believe that~~~

    Gleason was 5+4 (back
Gleason was 5+4 (back number is almost meaningless).

I have positive margins- bladderneck involvement.

    I am a T4.

I still have a lot of leakage.

1 year on eligard- then stopped. 1 yr is enough!!

Maybe that is what positive margins are, but truefully, sounds more negative to me than positive.

I am very happy for Dencil. And very envious at the same time. and 14 months into the new me I'm afraid I'm not as positive (like in margins?) as I used to be.

EVA:A wet night is no big
    EVA:
A wet night is no big deal unless you are having them Every Night...Just part of the recovery learning process! I only had one of those nights, I think the first week after cath removal.

The positive margin meant in my case when the Prostate was sent to the lab they then take the specimin and INK it. They are wanting the specimen to be clean all the way around. On Mine there was a small area where the cancer went to the very edge of the surgical specimen. What does this mean? Well the doc's don't know for sure...
My positive margin was at the base of the prostate...not the neck area such as trew's.

    1. This margin in my case might be literally the very edge of the cancer cells.
    2. The cancer might be beyond that area and might cause problems down the road.
    3. Surgeon told me to think of it as lightning stiking a tree. It kills the tree and things around it. Surgery kills the cancer and the trauma of surgery hopefully might kill any of the cancer cells if they went beyond that edge.
    4. I have to get my PSA checked more frequent then other guys for the first 5 years. Statistically if the cancer comes back it will be in a five year time period. So I get my PSA checked every 3-4 months. So far getting 0's and have a checkup in June which will be 10 months post surgery.

The doc told me that everything elso came back clean and that is part of the surgeons decision...how far does the surgeon cut? If you cut to little then more chance of recurrance or if you cut too much then more problems with the urinary and sexual return. So now I just eat healthy, Avoid certain things, take all kinds of extracts such as green tea, pomegranite, vitamin D, Flax seeds, Acai berries and other things that have been shown in Lab studies to slow or kill cancer cells. OH yes and also firm believer in prayer.

The doc says with the frequent PSA testing if my PSA starts to climb from 0 they will know immediately and then I can get a secondary treatment such as radiation to kill the rest of the little beasts. I've even read that Dr. Walsch at John Hopkins who pionered the nerve sparing surgery states in his book that in all the studies at John Hopkins they don't see any advantage to starting radiation immediately or waiting and seeing what happens with the positive margin. So I'm waiting for now and keeping a positive outlook.

With Trews Gleason of 9 that is more severe then my Gleason 7. In his case they recommended Radiation after surgery which he did with Proton Beam treatment.

Eva - If you would like send me your email address to lewvino@yahoo.com and I can send you a list of some very interesting things that I believe were all direct answers to prayers during my cancer journey so far. Anyone else is welcome to them also. Or you can contact me directly through this forum on the send an email part.
