Jim came home from having his liver surgery yesterday after several minor set-backs and is recovering at home. Before he left his surgeon looked him in the eye and said, "you are cancer free." We will do mop up chemo after he recovers fully from surgery, but cancer free? Really? Can they say that? I am cautiously overjoyed here (if that's possible) I would like to be explosively overjoyed but I'm still saying "what?"
A month ago our Doctors here at home were telling us liver surgery was not possible because both lobes of his liver were involved. I knew we should get a second opinion on his treatment and after posting here, many of you told me we should seek the advise of a liver surgeon, and keep looking until we find someone who is willing. Well we did. Boy am I grateful. Had we just taken the advise of our local Doctors, he would have just been doing chemo now until he could no longer tolerate it or until it quit working. (can she really say cancer free?) Anyway, this is a shout out to any newcomers to the site to listen to the good advise here and I hope a good lesson in the value of a second and third opinion. It's also a shout out of praise to all of you for posting here to help others. We all got inducted into this awful club none of us wanted to be in and it kinda reminds me of an AA group where the old timers help the newcomers with their advise and experience and encouragement. Everyone here has been through their own personal rodeo and you all have valuable words of wisdom. I hope to be on here years from now giving encouragement and words of hope as well. I have not only been encouraged by the NED stories, but also by your words of hope, the stories of courage and strength, love and compassion, patience and kindness. One of you semi-colons even came to visit us in the hospital. (thank you Peggy Luckey you are indeed a walking miracle and a friend) even the recent posts about struggling with spouses and finding joy in the little things....all helpful. I have been listening to a song by Wayne Watson, called "Home Free" for several months now and it has really be helpful to me. I want to share it with you. Here are the words. Thank you again for being a discussion board full of unsung heros in your own battles with this beast. God bless you and I will continue praying for all of you.
I'm trying hard not to think you unkind...But Heavenly Father, if you know my heart
surely you can read my mind...
Good people underneath a sea of grief...some get up and walk away...some will find ultimate relief...
Home free...eventually, at the ultimate healing, we will be home free
Home free, oh I've got a feeling, at the ultimate healing we will be home free.
Out in the corridors, we pray for life
A mother for her baby, a husband for his wife
Oh, sometimes the good die young, it's sad but true
and while we pray for one more heartbeat, the real comfort is with you
You know pain has little mercy and suffering's no respector of age, of race or position, I know every prayer gets answered, but hardest one to pray is slow to come...Oh Lord, not mine, but Your will be done.....let it be
Home free...eventually, at the ultimate healing, we will be home free
Home free, it's more than a feeling, at the ultimate healing, gonna be home free

Nana,
Beautiful that you and Jim are home. I love that you were encouraged to get more opinions. This board is truly incredible for sharing information that makes huge differences in people's lives. Just a few days ago I shared with a doctor about the Sugarbaker method. The doc's dad had retroperitoneal mets and the doc had not heard about HIPEC or Dr. Sugarbaker. I thank this board for sharing so much.
I'll keep you and Jim in my prayers.
Take care.
Aloha,

I am glad to hear that youlisa42 said:glad to hear all went well
I'm so glad to hear the surgery went well and Jim is now home from the hospital. Cancer free sounds wonderful!
God bless,
Lisa
I am glad to hear that you are doing good after surgery. I had a liver resection on April 6th and today is my first day back to work. They said I am "cancer free" now too, but need to do 6 months of chemo just in case as an "INSURANCE" policy. Are you having to do that too? I just hate the thought of it. I am really emotionally having a lot of trouble with it.

Another Good Story
Very good news indeed - another opinion changed the course of both of your lives - that's a wonderful story. So glad all is going as planned.
It's a great big world out there and it's terrific that you can come here and get helpful advice on a great many topics, from folks who have been through it.
May your blessings continue:)
