The China Study - Book
I recently downloaded and watched a movie/doco called 'Healing Cancer from the inside' I found on a site about 'Green Smoothies'. A Dr. Colin CAMPBELL featured throughout the doco talking about diet, nutrition, cancer and his research. I was intrigued by his claims and went off and quickly found his book. It is based on the largest ever research event involving humans of this kind ever in history. Some of you may have already read it or heard about it.
The teaser that got him interested more in the Cancer side was when he met an Indian researcher who had found remarkable differences in the outcome in his animal experiments where they induced cancer using Aflotoxin. One group were given a diet of 20% Animal Protein (AP) while the other group were given just 5% AP. The result were: 100% of Group A developed the tumors and died. Group B, 100% recovered and lived.
Dr. Campbell is a very esteemed researcher with an impressive resume and was part of the Pro protein lobby and on US Government panels on nutrition and was to lead nutrition programs in developing countries where they were to introduce higher protein diet programs to help the 'natives'. They were even trying to develop higher protein crops (Corn & Peanuts). This chance meeting with the Indian scientist threw a spanner in his works as it went against conventional wisdom and all the beliefs he had grown up with and was working on to 'save the world'- along with all the esteemed other leading doctors and researchers of the time.
In brief, Dr. CAMPBELL went off and ran his own research to verify the results himself (What would the Indians know ?). He found the results were..100% the same and he even varied the research to come up with a bunch of other results to further back the discovery that the Animal Protein did actually cause the initiation and progress of cancer.
A point of note, the Milk protein they used is called Casein. I don't want to cause a stampede but that Ensure most of you are using is full of of Milk protein.
Dr. CAMPBELL went on to conduct a massive study of Chinese populations to find out the relationships of diet and nutrition. The findings are clear and indisputable for me.
His book is immaculately referenced and most of the content is from his own findings over nearly 40 years of research. He is not selling a fad diet. The issue is 'does diet and nutrition affect whether we get cancer or not?'. The answer is yes. While percentages of risk and increased risk vary for differnent types of cancer, gender and age, the basic fact remains that as we increase the amount of Animal Proteins we eat, we increase the chances of getting some type of cancer. The relationship is linear and consistent. This is also the same for other major 'western' killer disease namely heart disease, cardio-vascular disease, and diabetes.
In most cases, it appeared that diet over-rides environmental factors. The fastest example I can think of is that earlier in the Century, Japanese men were (and still are) the heaviest smokers on the planet, yet their incidence of lung cancer was very low. That was until they started consuming meat in greater quantities(Due to affluence, better farming techniques etc). When you can find people doing the same thing one one level (Smoking) and then they change somethig else (Eating more meat), you can draw clear data.
The China study went much much further and found populations with high levels of cancer and then other wiht low levels of cancer and they then studied their diets and other factors (enviromental) and also used blood analysis to further the depth of the study.
While there are many views on diet and nutrition, and I have tried for a long while to figure it all out and I settled in a middle of the road of 'everything in moderation' for quite a while, which is really a lazy or a nervous 'in the middle' approach. I now see things a little differently, mainly because I had Cancer. I know my immune system was compromised even though I was reasonably healthy and ate well, exercised. I have struggled for many years with chronic fatigue and acid reflux issues - all of which my Naturopath brother would try to explain were related to my immune system and digestion. Most could be fixed with diet and certain variations of diet to promote healing of the conditions I had.
Well the light has come on now. While I may try in desperation to shine this same light on many of you, I also have to be realistic and accept many will not follow this path. I do get distressed when I hear of the amount of people who have gone through this horrid treatment we have all been through, only to go back to their old ways, gulping down junk food, bacon, processed everything, start smoking again or slam back into the booze...
Just because the rads and chemo knocked it out for now, doesn't mean we are resistant to a relapse. We are all at higher risk now and hopefully should pay attention and start to right the wrongs we were doing in the first place. They measure our survival as a '5 year rate'. All other diseases are considered 'cured or not'. Not ours, just 5 years. We all have and will have cancer cells in our bodies. Our attack cells should over come them before they get a grip.
The fact that the enzymes and biochemical reaction difference between the Plant Protein we get and the Animal Protein we get - is where the problem starts. The reaction from the AP enzyme in digestion/conversion process of food is prone to produce a byproduct that attaches to the DNA of healthy cells and turns them into Cancer cells. The more AP we eat, the more this happens. The small breakouts of these cells are called Foci. We all have them. It's when the balance is tipped and the bad cells get the chance to divide and multiply out of control that we start heading for big trouble. The studies show this process is either stopped or reversed when the AP is removed from the diet. The converse is also shown where an increase or introduction of AP is made, the cancers return/ spread/increase. The rest is history.
I hope many of you take this opportunity to get hold of this book or extracts from it. Your Doctors may not agree - the old 'moderation' argument does hold weight for some, and your hairdresser will know more about it - but this is certainly a wake up call if ever I have seen one.
Many of the Cancer organizations are starting to hint that we should 'maybe' be eating plant based diets and 'reducing' our intake of animal proteins. No one really wants to stick their necks out too far.
If you disagee with all this, that's fine. If you read this study and still disagree, then please contact me.
Wishing all continued recoveries and wellbeing.

Hi Scambuster
The only book like this (Healing Cancer from the inside) I can find is by a guy called Mike Anderson, it that the right book. Very interesting, as I was watching a show the other day on the Public network about the Chicken industry. They grow a Chick from an egg to be ready to market in 48 days; by pumping them up with all kind of stuff, normally it takes 6 Months. Makes you wonder if eating chicken is safe, after seeing this I can’t eat chicken any more.0 -

Hi Hondo,
Sorry should have put the authors name on it. Yes that is the one. I actually downloaded the Doco via Torrent bit.
You are right about the Chicken thing. They are pumped full of hormones. They do the same for beef cattle now and have a 'slow release hormone' capsule which is injected into the ear. Makes faster conversion of the grain to beef. There are other things too like I remember when I lived in the US, I was bewildered why Chicken was 'yellow' in the supermarket. It turns out they feed them a colored pigment/additive to make the skin go yellow...sells better. If you do decide to eat chicken, best to go with free range and it should be a pinkish blue color.

Love this book. Discovered I pre-cancer. I swear by it but, truthfully, don't do a very good job living by it. I try though.

I have read other books about diet and have switched my husband to a vegetarian/organic diet. He has been drinking ensure to help suppliment his calories and nutritian. Wasn't aware of the Casein issue, what is an alternative drink that is milk protein free? Thank you for the info, I am reaching for anything I can get my hands on. Take care!!!0 -

Many thanks, Scam. 5-years, huh? Hmmmm. Must read. The AP means no more meat, right? Have been eating such in my chefs, and roadhouse, so that's a bummer with the later. Thanks again.

Hi Scam,
At most points we are drinking ensure and other milk products we are in treatment and are trying to take in as many calories as easily as we can. Until I have gained back about 20 of the 50 pounds I have lost, I will continue on this path for calories. Then and only then will I try to practice watching what I put in my body. I already have all natural beef in my freezer, and the first book I read after I found out I had cancer was Anticancer, an awesome book, which discusses some of these very things. But right now, the cancer that was in me has had it's butt kicked and until I gain some weight, I will continue with AP.
Best,

Hi CG, The only Plant Based supplement I found and used with great success was Vitashake by Sunrider. I am sure there are others, but that's what I used and still take one a day now 7 mths out.
Each Vitashake has 200 calories and if you mix with enriched Rice Milk (or Soy or Almond milks) you should get another 200 cals so work on 400 a serve. I put mine through the PEG.
You can buy Vitashake online but best to join the 'club' and get the 20 or 25% discount. It is a MLM company (hate that) but their products are very good. Kept me alive and I am feeling great now.
Is hubby eating now, still using a PEG ??
Let us know how you go with it.
Hi Steve,
Understand the weight gain thing though I am now content with my new weight - 77kg (prev 94kg). I wouldn't mind a few more pounds back on the chest and shoulders but I will need to work out for that to happen. Have you checked your ideal weight re BFI ?? You might be better off just buying new clothes that fit !! I eventually gave in and did and am very glad I did. It is part of the new me and i even get compliments now on my new lean mean look.
Kent,
I found after reading the book, the choice became very clear, much easier and very simple. At first it;s a chore and you feel 'left out' when choosing not to eat AP's. Pre-C I was a 'foodie' - family has been in restaurants for many years - since the mid 60's, and my favorite meal was a medium rare Aussie T-Bone steak. I do understand the difficulty in making such a major change only too well. After what I read in The China Study, and after all the other readings, I reached a pinnacle and the adjustment just got much much easier. Hope others here find the same.

Hi Scambuster
I have been doing a lot of research in the area of nutrition. With my husband getting ready to begin radiation, I have searched for alternatives to Ensure and Boost. After reading the ingredients and being handed these products by the 'nutritionist' I was pretty appalled. High Fructose Corn Syrup and Casein. We are trying to create high nutrition liquid that he will hopefully be able to get down. I am aware of the sugar issues with cancer but have found a few products using coconut milk and agave nectar that are like ice cream that can add some calories and pretty good fat to his liquid diet. There are also vegetable based protein powders out there. Brown rice seems to be a good choice since whey is basically a milk a derivative and I am a little afraid of soy with the cancer. Any knowledge you have in this area would be appreciated! I will go and buy this book! :0)
Thanks,

Hi Jen,
Pls see my previous post in this thread re: an alternative Shake which I used (Vitashake - Sunrider). I found one other in a quick search but I am sure there are plenty more non-dairy and non-soy nutrition shake products on the market. Here is one :

I get kinda upset (with myself) when I read stuff like this because I had all kinds of nutrition and excersise and other game plans for after I was done with radiation. I have always been an everything in moderation person. I ate what I wanted just not a lot of food. Got a bit chubby once, but lost it, heaviest was 142. For the most part I averaged 125 @ 5'2", very busty hourglass. My Drs and nutrition people that I have delt with over the years were happy with my mostly meditterain style diet. All my plans are pretty much ruined at this point. Since I cannot swallow after 2 dillatations still, and my tongue still feels scalded etc.
I am doing better with being able to eat something other than oatmeal, thank God, cause I was completely miserable and wondered why, I fought to live. sorry if that sounds harsh, but it is true. Food, family, and gourmet cooking WAS MY WHOLE LIFE, outside of my crazy work life, and singing in church choir and with an 86 member chorale, which I can no longer do either. So now I am just kinda miserable, but frustrated that I am not able to get past 98lbs.
The only thing that I can swallow, that I can taste and semi enjoy is sweeter dairy products. I am still trying to juice, and manage to get some down, but not with much success. It is what it is. I am not going to beat myself up about this.
If things were different and I had no PEG, mouth working, no stricture in throat, yeah, I would be following more along the lines of that diet. Until I can, it's nutren 1.5, soft cheeses, yogurt, milk, soft veggies, butter, olive oil, etc like I have been doing. When you read the survival rates for FA patients and HNC they are worse than the 5 years, more than half don't even make it out of treatment, so I am not even going there. I am going to eat whatever I can get down and sorta taste. And try to enjoy it and not worry about it. Try to get some joy out of it somewhere. It's not easy since there are very few things I can taste.0 -

Yea scam, I have already checked my ideal weight, and it is around 200 lbs. Thank you for asking though. And by the way, did you think I had any other choice than to go and buy new clothes after losing an actual 58 lbs. total? I get compliments on how well I look also, but these people do not understand that I am still sick, and still healing. I really wish that I could make them understand that! So like I said it's AP for me until I get up to my body fat index as you put it.

Sorry Steve, shoulda said BMI not BFI. Even though I am very lean and still about 38lbs lighter than pre 'C' my BMI is at the top of the range for my height (25.40 & about 5'9" and 170lbs now). I haven't been able to gain another pound since I hit 170lbs ! I don't have a huge appetite these day like most of us I suppose, but I feel great so i figure I must have hit my perfect and healthy weight. I suppose my other thought was that in the US (and in Australia) with the obesity epidemic, if you are normal weight, people think you're sick !
I will never forget when my wife was studying in Oklahoma in 2000, how everyone would always wonder if she was sick - because she only weighed 118lb but was in fact her perfect weight. She just looked so skinny among the tragically overweight kids she was studying with. The school cafeteria was shameful and i guess that's why so many people are now lobbying in the US to legislate healthier foods in schools. Anyway, I hope you get those extra pounds on Steve. You have done so well to date coping with the treatments so I am sure you will continue being the stellar performer.
