Cancer survivors that want to get a band going...Why not?

I've had a project in mind...a punk/rock/folk/whatever band of cancer survivors, within the 'young adult group,' and survived any type of cancer, whether years ago or recently, even still going through it. Names I've thought of are very 'tongue-in-cheek' and irreverent, but a serious-minded project, nonetheless.

If this is something destined to take off, the idea is for it to be very collaborative. Of course, like anyone, there's music I like, and don't like. I entertained the thought of a straight-up punk thing, like the Ramones(Joey and Johnny both passed due to cancer). I thought, could it be a death metal band? (Admit, you have to chuckle there.) I grew up with the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Simon n' Garfunkel, Iggy Pop, and still into them, but also listening to newer ones like Mgmt, Amazing Baby, the Shins, the Fruit Bats, Kings of Leon. Oh, I forgot to include the Plasmatics somewhere in there. The kind of music that makes me want to get out the barf-bag: Nickelback, Staind, Puddle of Mudd, Creed, Linken Park.

Everyone knows someone who 'had it.' The many ways it continues to put obstacles in families' lives always blows me away - access to care, health insurance, financial problems, relationships, etc.

This idea has two purposes - to celebrate and ponder our lives, and to raise $$$ to go to various charities or grants for patient programs. For example, part of what a live gig brings in could help someone's health insurance costs. The Clash did it. They were advocates of class disparities and racism, making statements about that.

I play guitar, live in Austin, the 'Live Music Capital of the World.' I just want to see how this flies, what people play, anyone who knows someone, who knows someone, etc.

What are you thinking??
