yes yes yes don't do that
Shelly,
I don't know what kind of surgery he had weather it was IVOR LEWIS or MIE, but ice cream is not a good thing to have after surgery, as its the milk part, of it, I don't know what it is, but Jeff couldn't do it either, it made him sick, and was in the bathroom if he did eat it. Its I think the new stomach has a problem accepting the ice cream thing. if you need further answers let me know.

nausea
hi,
I am a three year esophagectomy survivor. I still have nasea. I do better now then I did initially, but I still have a j-tube for additional caloric intake.
I get sweats, quicker heartrate, etc. if I eat too much. Milk products can really cause problems. I am better now, and can eat a small ice cream cone without getting sick. But, it took a long time.
I take 2 different medications regulalry to hlp. Tygan 2-3 times a day and Nortrytilene at night.
Good luck,
David

Food after Surgery
Shelly,
I found that I became "lactose intolerant" after surgery - 20 months ago. ANY whole milk food will cause dumping - cramps in the intestines, nausea, sweating, etc.. Sounds like what happened to your husband. I also have to watch how much I eat, how fast I eat it, how much I chew it and what the combination is or I will have discomfort (too full) or dumping. It seems as though it will be a life long process to figure out eating as the foods that bother me change with time.
I also have weird cravings. My worst is for french fries. I also can crave food when I am so full that I am very uncomfortable. It can take up to 15 minutes for the stop eating signal to reach the brain.
William covered all the medical and dietary information above so that should be a great help.
Good luck.

What do these meds that you mentioned do? Tygan & Nortrytilene. DO they help prevent that "dumping syndrome" ? (if you eat to fast much too much sugar or carbohydrates, etc--causes those sweats, etc)
By the way--CONGRATS on being a 3 year esophagectomy survivor!!! Did you have EC too?
