Cut into RCC tumor, spread cancer?

I was 35 years old when diagnosed and did not fit any of the criteria. My RCC type was Chromophobe, stage I. The tumor was 2.5cm and fully enclosed in the kidney. But, the doctor tried to do a partial nephrectomy and cut too close to the tumor. I had the full kidney removed but he used the same scapel to cut the rest of the kidney out. Wouldn't cancer cells potentially be spread to the healthy tissue left behind where the kidney used to be? Has anyone else had this happen?

Since my surgery, I have worried that the doctor put me at undue risk. He wanted the partial nephrectomy, I wanted a full but he talked me into letting him try for a partial. It's a decsion I will regret for the rest of my life...which I hope is a LONG time.

So far, so good. But, as I've read many times on this board, it can pop up years later. My 4 year check up is next Tuesday. I've been coming to this site since 2006. It's been a great resource and I really appreciate this group. Thank you all!

I"M new to the site. My son who is not 40 yet was told just a few days ago that he has a mass on his left kidney. He was told he had cancer. It wasancerous mass. He is having symptoms where he can not eat solid foods as it feels as if he has a blockage. The few test they ran thus far show no blockage. They are trying to say that the full feeling he gets after eating a few bites must be a side effect from the mass on his kidney. He has suffered exstreem pain in his left side & from his back. They want to go in through tubes & freeez the mass & suck it out. Has anyone ever experienced this type of proceedure. They say he does not have bone cancer. But his pancrease is giving a high reading in the blood test. Yet at this time they are not sure why that is happening. He has lost weight & has been on a liquid diet. The first CT scan that was run 3 months ago showed a cyst. They were not concern with it than & failed to do any more test. I do not agree with the Dr"s decission that the problem with the bowle & food is related to the cancer of the kidney. Anyone have any insight on this. Thank You

    I went through a laproscopic
I went through a laproscopic radical nephrectomy 6 years ago. Only "blockage" I experienced was constipation from the morphine after the surgery.

    I had the entire kidney
I had the entire kidney removed and had lung mets years later. Studies I've seen do not show improved outcome over partial.

    Freezing / feeling full
Please make sure they put a tube down his throat and look in his stomach! I was having a cough, full feeling after 2 bites, was loosing weight and got real shaky with pain in the stomach. I had polyps in my stomach! After they removed them I felt fine. This was all a couple years after my right kidney was removed. I was afraid I had cancer in my stomach and so was my family Doctor. Thankfully he ordered the right test! I had the stomach polyps again a year later but they didn't cause problems as it was just a small one that time. I now don't have that checked for 5 years endless I have problems. (it was not cancer in the stomach)

I had right kidney removed in 2006 and this April they did the freezing of a tumor on my left kidney. They did not suck it out though. They froze it and it just gets absorbed by your body. I'm feeling really good but tire easy now. Was really only down for 1 to 2 weeks. I get an MRI in 3 months to make sure the cancer isn't growing anymore on my sole kidney.

    kidney cancer surgery:
What a story that one is. That is frightening to think about what you went through. I'm glad you have had all these years without major problems. Why do you wish you had done a full removal of the kidney? From what I have read a partical removal has been succesfull. My son was just told he has kidney cancer. He is 41 yr old with a wife & three children. They think they can go in & freeze it & remove the mass. Has anyone had this Cryo procedure done? I understand it depends on the how large the mass is & how close it is to other organs. So far it is not in his bones or lipnoids. He has been having bowle problems & they are not sure what is causing that. He is on a liquid diet basicly. He has lost weight & has pain in his left side & into the back. He is going to a dr in Birmingham, Al & to a hospital there. Not UAB. Hospital. I pray that it has not spread any where else. He is having high readings in his blood from the pancreous. I do not know for sure if he will elect to have the CRYO procedure done or removal of intire kidney. I got information from the cancer society & it was very infomative. God be with you & we will pray for you.golleedolly63

    freezing/feeling full
Hi your story was very interresting to me. My son has just been told he has Kidney Cancer & they seem to think he might be a candidate for using the FREEZING method called CRYO for short. I guess they think it may be small enough to do the that procdure. He will know more after he sees the Kidney Specialist on Tuesday. He has been having bowle problems & full feeling if he trys to eat solid foods. They claim they can not find any blockage & no polps. Yet they are not able to figure out YET what is causing these problems. He has high blood readings on the pancreous. They are trying to blame it on the cancer. I doubt that is the cause of the bowle constiaption & full feeling when he eats solid food. Sorry to hear about all you have gone through. May God be with you. We will pray for you.
