Saw our DR yesterday and .....

Dencil and I went to his regular dr yesterday because he wanted to and he has been his dr for 25 yrs...he is also a infectous disease specialist....He told us right up front that he would go for the surgery if it was him and that he would use our urologist as the surgeon...He said that he is an excellent surgeon (I do believe him , as he performed Turp for Dencil) and had amazingly easy painless recovery...

Anyways, He said that our Dr. Severence is an Highly talented surgeon....and that he has seen many of his patients after surgery..
He also said that he would by pass the radiation...he has also seen patience w/lots of problems after radiation...bleeding from the rectum and the urine .

He had a strong oponion on this
I tend to really take his oponion seriously as he was very serious , where he is usually jolly and joking and also he has nothing to gain from giving us this advice.

anyways we continue to pray for guidance and healing


This is a up and down journey for sure...

P.s he also said that even though Dencil is 73 that he is in good shape for surgery...as he has already had a very recent stress test among other things.

well we have one more hurdle to pass

We have another appt with our Urologist...to ask him specificall how many
prostectomys he has performed... etc...

I know one thing the office where he works...the receptionists leave a little
to be desired...They told me that we might do a phone conference for us ...and
I said NO....I do not feel comfortable w/that..

I for one want to sit across from the dr and talk....

Face to face is important to me also Evagirl. When my local urologist gave me the news about my PC he set up an appointment for my wife and I to come in. We visited with him for right at one hour and he was very patient with answering questions. The one thing that really impressed me was when he said...Even if you pick a different option then open surgery I will still support you and give you follow up care. He recommended the Davinci Surgeon to me at Vanderbilt. My wife (Being a nurse) Checked out the local urologist via the hospital grape vine and all had high praises for him. But I chose DaVinci rather then open. I've since met another man at our church who had prostate cancer and surgery with My Local Doc (Open surgery) and is doing great also.

You and your husband have to be comfortable in the choice since this impacts not only your husband but you as well.

Forgive me but have to tell you a funny story here...When I went up to Vanderbilt I had heard so much praise for Dr. Smith. After our talking I said ....Dr. Smith I have one more question for you. I have talked to former patients, reseached you on the web,watched a video on the web of you doing the robotic surgery and all I read is good things about you and high praises. Can you tell me something bad about yourself? He just laughed and said 'sorry I can't spend all afternoon with you telling you my faults' That sealed the deal with me that he would even admit that he had faults. I signed on the dotted line with his scheduling nurse and she even gave me a hug and said We will take care of you. And they did. I'm used to getting cut, pokes, fingers you know where...etc at the Doc. I loved the hug from his scheduler!

OUr Urologist has done 1,500 plus prostectomys

So we are content with that number and he answered all of our questions w/out hesitation and then some...He even said that if we wanted he would find someone else to do the surgery and not have a problem with that at all..

I agree...the primary care dr only knows about what he sees in his office and his speciality..

To be fair I have to say that when we saw the Urologist today , he said that our primary dr. probably sees the problem cases w/radiation...and our Urologist did not give us a negative view of radiation.
It is really another form of treatment that I think works well for a lot of cases..

I had it myself when I was going thru BC.
