My husband and I talked alot about the passing of Fess Parker. We are of that age when Disney productions were in their prime. I loved him as Daniel Boone and Davy Crocket. I was quite young, I begged my parents for the hat, holster, vest etc and finally got the vest and hat. Dad drew the line on the belt, powder horn and guns because "little girls don't wear such things" I used to trade with my boy cousins to use their parts of the outfit. He was my first "ideal man", later having crushes on other tv stars: Guy Williams (Zorro), Johnny Weismuller (Tarzan) and Roy Rogers. LOL, boy does this bring me back to a more innocent time.He sure will be missed. Hope R's surgery goes well. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

I am originally from NY, as were my parents, and I think we must have had the same dad! I had brothers and male cousins, and my dad also insisted I do "girl things"~I could be a cheerleader, but never an athlete! Defined roles, back in the day! As PC as it is not, and if you don't tell anyone, much as I like equality, a big part of my psyche misses men standing up for women when they enter a room and opening doors, etc. I know that still exists, but it isn't the NORM. And while I am venting about days gone by, remember when we needed opermission to call adlults by their first names? They were Mr/Mrs, and at the very most Aunt/Uncle! Ok vent done~ I'm over it! LOL

Claudia, I will be thinking of you and Reggie and praying for clean scans, tests, and excellent results for Reggie's knee surgery. What a week you have.
Also, thank you for sharing your experience with Fess Parker. I, too, remember him well from his Davy Crockett years. He was young and handsome, with that wonderful voice you mention! I will send up a prayer for him and his family. Thank you for letting us know what a wonderful person he was.
Thank you Moopy! It is nice seeing you post, and Aortus too of course! I am glad you don't have the need to be here like last year ( shudder) but that you both pop in and contribute your sweetness and wisdom!
Hugs,

That's a lot to deal with all in one week -- please keep us posted on how you and Reggie are doing, and please be extra gentle with yourself this week.

P.S. Does it make me a bad person because I chuckled a little when you said that Reggie is having his knee "cleaned"? I'm picturing the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz, with that squirt bottle....:-)
I dunno, Traci, does it make you a bad person???? Nah~ it makes you a funny one, and I only wish I could hand him the equivelant of that Wizardly Oil-Can, namely a can of WD-40!
Thanks for the giggles!

Dear Kindred Spirit...
Heartfelt hopes that all will go well for you tomorrow, that you'll be told NED remains as your constant companion. Of course, dear friend, I totally understand your feelings as your appointment approaches - had that same every-6-months visit just a couple of weeks ago. No - hasn't gotten any "easier" for me, either. Although you're anxious now - you'll feel relieved soon. I believe so with all of my being. :-)
Also, best wishes to your sweet Reggie - for his surgery to go without a hitch, for speedy recovery, and a much better knee as a result.
Sincere condolences for the loss of your dear friend - it's quite clear from your posts that he holds a very, very special place within your heart. I know you will always cherish your own unique and personal memories of him. Sending prayers for his soul to rest in peace, for his family, and all who knew and loved him.
Ironically - I, too, will be attending memorial/funeral services this week on Wednesday and Thursday. My Uncle Tony - my Dad's last surviving brother - passed away on Sunday. In his own home, his own bed, while asleep overnight.
Big, warm, comforting hugs backatcha...
And always with...
Kindest regards, 12/250 -

Chen wishing you and Reggie
Chen wishing you and Reggie more of the best this week. You are quite an inspiration to all of us. I've said a prayer for you and Reggie and also for Fess's family.
When I hear the name Fess Parker , raccoon skin caps immediately come to mind. They were the rage in the early to mid 50's. I never owned one but my brother and most of my male cousins owned those furry caps. I, like many of you from that era had a father with very specific ideas for his daughter. There was a definite line between what boys wore and games they played, and what girls wore and games they played. Golf was the only sport deemed acceptable for me by good old dad.
Look forward to hearing how the week goes for you and your special Mr. R.0 -
Prayers and Positive Thoughts
Hope all is going well, Chen. Remember "What-ifs" are a two sided coin.
Somehow I get a sense of comfort knowing that you will be there to bid our beloved Fess Parker good bye. Your appreciation of him as not only a star and American icon, but as a fellow human and your neighbor touches my heart.
Poor Reggie - all I can think of is a scrub brush to the knee, getting it veeery clean. OUCH! I keep trying to replace the image with the oil can scenario, but can't quite get there. I can hear the oil can going "click-squeak click-squeak" but it is very faint. I have faith you can nurse him back to health and then some.
Prayers and positive thoughts sent your way! Thanks for letting us all know what's up.0 -
How did it go, Chen?
Hope all went well and that you felt our presence at your appointment. I also wanted to comment on Fess Parker and other elderly persons dying peacefully in their sleep. You know, I used to be afraid of death in any form and thought it would be a horrible thing no matter what. But now, the idea of living a long, full life and then simply stopping is a lovely one. My great grandmother had such an end. She was in her late 80's, living alone in a stylish apartment in a fashionable part of Istanbul. She had a great marriage and when her husband died, sold their house and moved to the city. There she attended theater, ballet, opera, had scores of friends and lunched with the ladies every week. One afternoon she came home from lunch, and called her daughter to ask her to come over. Then she lay down on the couch, closed her eyes and simply stopped living. Her daughter came over to find her mother lying peacefully on the couch, lipstick still fresh, dress impeccable, pearls on her neck. I just love that family story. Thanks all for reminding me of it.
Love you,

So Sorry for Your Loss
Oh, Chen!
I had read on another forum about Fess Parker's passing, but I only just read your thread and learned that you knew him as far more than "Davy Crockett" on television. It is extra special when one learns about the caring and warm qualities of a celebrity. I love thinking of him as the Grand Marshall of Relay for Life and of him calling you personally to thank you for your thoughtfulness and concern for Native Americans. Those stories really bring him to life for the rest of us . . . and thus, you have helped keep him living beyond his physical passing.
I hope the funeral was heartwarming and fulfilling rather than draining, Chen.
I also hope that Reggie's surgery goes well tomorrow--we'll look forward to hearing good news when you have time to post again.
Please take care of yourself--you are such an inspiration in the way you embrace us all!
Love, Sandy0 -
Best of luck to you this
Best of luck to you this week Chen. You're positive, upbeat manner will get you through it, no doubt!

Sending Love Your Way
Hi Chen,
I just saw this post so by now you have been to the onco visit which I hope went well and look forward to hearing from you in that regard.
Reggie will be in my positive thoughts and prayers tonight and tomorrow, I do know how those knee things go since my son had his knee redone in high school due to a wrestling injury so.....Reggie listen to those docs (had to beat my son with a stick the first few days...it was either the youthfulness or the boy who thought he was fine since the doc fixed him). I am sure he is going to get plenty of ♥ from Chen to carry him through the recovery time.
I am not surprised that you have a connection with Fess Parker, he was a great man and is a kind soul much like you. I can recall sitting on my springy horse watching his shows with my braids raccoon cap and bongos...yes I could multi-task at a young age.
Sending Love and Prayers to all of you,

just coming across this post today and am hoping all came out well for you yesterday. Let us know when you can. I also heard about Fess Parker, and it makes me sad to see so many of our icons from long ago are leaving us.
Reggie will be in good hands with you for his surgery (or oiling).
Take care of both of you.

Nothing is wrong with the ringed-eyed animal. Our cyber-censors do not want us saying
C O O N, as that could indeed be deemed offensive! And the auto-censor just recognizes letter sequences, not actual words!

PS We had a heck of a time some months ago figuring out why Weight Watchers was also astericked out when the word didn't have spaces. Even when it was a "light bulb moment" for most of us, some of the sisters in here didn't figure out why! Weightwatchers, indeed!0 -
It's Taken Me a Few Days to Respond
Dear Chen,
As strong as you are, even though it is 7 years later, you are still apprehensive about the lab results. The only way I can respond to that emotion is to send you ONE BIG BEAR HUG.
It's Friday and I know that you did great on your checkup. You lost 9 lbs. and your cholesterol went down to 117 from 218. You eat healthy and you exercise. The biggest payoff is your cholesterol. I am going to use you as a role model for my friends who have a cholesterol problem. It just goes to show you how a person can affect another person, even those not known to that person. Chen, you are becoming famous - nationwide.
Yesterday was Reggie’s knee surgery. He is in your capable hands. What kind of knee surgery? May I offer a suggestion for Reggie. I had knee surgery where some cartilage was removed. I also had a special pillow (egg-crate-shape pillow…for my head and neck… purchased from my chiropractor) that brought wonderful comfort and relief to my leg and knee as it rested on the pillow. The pillow absorbs all pressure which is why the leg and knee felt great. If you have a Brookstone Store nearby, go there to purchase one of their memory pillows which also relieve pressure. Reggie will be ever so thankful and grateful
Today is Fess Parker’s funeral. He gave you good memories, some which you have shared with us.
Lots of Hugs,
Janelle0
