Pet scan is what I am having

well they just called back and it will be a pet scan never had one of them...in a week or so ...

Going Nuclear
Well, there is a 1st time for everything.

You will be asked to fast for several hours before your test - your glucose level has to be below 120 I believe, so the longer you can go without food or sugar the better it will be for you.

They will take you to a quiet room - inject you with the radioactive tracer - you will then sit in there for about 45 minutes to allow the "nuclear meds" (it is radioactive material) to flow throughout your body so they can get a better look at your insides.

Then they will take you to the PET scanner and you will lay with your arms above your heads for about 25-30 minutes depending on your body weight - it moves you through in increments taking images all the while.

The nuclear trace they inject with go to cells where they show "glucose uptake" - if areas "light up" that is an indication of cancer activity in those cells. If they don't light up, then you are probably ok.

I've had too many of these to count - they are expensive - and are used in conjunction with CT scans to help make a better determination of cancer activity or not.

You'll do fine with it - good luck.

Diabetes can cause elevated liver enzymes. Do a search and see!


Some common causes of elevated liver enzymes are:

Alcohol consumption

Autoimmune hepatitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, primary bilary cirrhosis, or other autoimmune disorders of the liver or bile ducts

Diabetes

High triglycerides, or obesity

Excessive use of kava kava, comfrey, pennyroyal, skullcap, or certain other herbal supplements

Gallstones

Hemochromatosis, Wilson's disease, or other metabolic liver diseases

Infections (for example, viral hepatitis or mononucleosis)

Medications such as some nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), cholesterol medications, anti-biotics or anti-seizure medicines.

my bs never gets below 185 even with 4 shots a day and 2500 mg of oral medication but what really makes me mad is friday I was told all the blood work looks good. did they not get this result back till today maybe they should hold off on telling us we are cancer free till they know for sure we are...I don't have a galbladder had it removed 35 yrs ago am not obese weight 155 so it could be any number of things and I am not worried I just hate waiting I don't have alot of patients...

Those blood tests........
Those blood tests........ my onc does my CBC stuff in office but all else is sent out and takes 2 -3 days to get back.

Let's just pray it's the diabetes. Did they say which enzyme is elevated? There's a lot of enzymes for the liver.

Fasting
I found that if I fasted between 12-14 hours before the appointment, my glucose came in good for the procedure.

I'm not sure how diabetes works with fasting, so your nursing staff should be given you instructions on what to do for a diabetic condition.

Absolutely nothing with sugar in it for 24 hours prior to the procedure...watch foods you consume for sugar about 12-14 prior to the treatment.

If your gluclose level is high - you will light up like a Christmas tree - the tracer they put into you prior circulates throughout your body, so if you have glucose above 120 many areas will be lit up in your body - and they might not be cancer at all, but will appear to the tech that these areas are affected.

Double check with your doctors to get a handle on what you can do.

If the doc is wanting a PET scan it is for a reason. Ask him why a PET and he should explain it to you then you can base your decision on what he tells you. Tina

they 1st said c sacn but I can't have the dye so changed to pet but my bs runs to high for that I will blow up the machine...lol

For my PET last week, the
For my PET last week, the nurse told me to eat a low carb, low sugar diet for 2 days. She said that they wanted a sugar level that was lower than my base line, whatever that base line may be. Hope this helps a little. Good luck.

very brittle
I don't think I have a base line it can be 185 and an hour later it can be 400 so I need to talk to my ONC I have a co-pmt and believe me I don't have money to throw away on a test if they aren't going to get true results from it...

get a copy of it on disk! - I have mine on my iPod along with MRI, CT, Xrays, pathology reports and most of my blood work.

Good luck with your PET. I'm like Craig and have had several. Mine are always in conjunction with a CT so I always have to drink that disgusting barium stuff along with the injection. I'm glad you aren't worrying! Let us know the exact date so we can send our prayers and positive thoughts.

I don't know if I can have a pet done because I am always running a high blood sugar we may just have to do a c scan...
