Update from Doctors
It was a small carcinoid tumor.
Here's the path report summary:
A. Appendix, appendectomy
- CLASSIC CARCINOID TUMOR OF THE DISTAL TIP OF THE APPENDIX, 0.9 CM, WITH MINIMAL
EXTENSION INTO THE PERIAPPENDICEAL ADIPOSE TISSUE
- ALL MARGINS ARE FREE OF THE CARCINOID TUMOR
- NO EVIDENCE OF LYMPHOVASCULAR INVASION
- NEGATIVE FOR ACUTE APPENDICITIS
It's very unlikely this will relapse. Barium enemia shows "slight filling of the appendiceal stump" but nothing to suggest a relapse of the carcinoid. (There was NO new growth).
This report is therefore OK. I'll forward this to Dr Khoe in case she has anything to add.
From My Surgeon>> Hi Mr. Ponto,
I agree with Dr. Polikoff- the study showed only a little stump of the appendix, which is normal after an appendectomy performed open (during open surgery, not laparoscopic).
Your carcinoid tumor was in the tip of the appendix, not close to where I cut the appendix, and it was less than 1 cm in size, so is unlikely for it to recur in the future.
The study looks good- no leak at your connection! So, we can proceed with reversing your ostomy when the surgery schedule has an opening.
Take care,
Jennifer Khoe
