Liver enzymes
From what I understand from when my liver 'readings' were a little high when I was having gall bladder attacks, one enzyme being high doesn't necessarily mean anything bad. In fact, if the tumors in hubby's liver are dying off, that can raise the AST. Here's a link with a little info on this test and high readings.

So glad hubby is finished with his FOLFOX and hope all his scans are great!0 -

The surg. onc. said when he was dx'd last june this wasn't a medical
emergency (he was talking to me).... Liver tests were normal and they
would monitor these readings. He had last chemo today and the onc.
said everything was good before treatment. I noticed the AST was a little
above normal (these numbers have been within range until this one)
knew you all would know more...
Have so much confidence in everyone here now don't even ask a questions...
just ask for comments on my thoughts, huh...phillieng..and you all came
through again...
Thanks dianetavegia for the positive spin...we'll sleep better tonight0 -
AST
Ever since my second chemo treatment my AST has been above the normal range (so have my other liver enzymes). My bloodwork this past week my AST was over 100! My oncologist isn't really concerned with that number as much as my bilirubin so I don't worry too much about it either. If you read the link at http://labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/ast/test.html you will see that AST can be elevated for all sorts of reasons (including exercise!). As my doctor explained it to me, I "insulted" my liver first with the systemic chemo, then I "insulted" it with liver resection and then I finally "insulted" it once again with the HAI pump treatment I do. So she said it's no wonder the number is high but that it would come down over time.
So don't worry too much about that slight elevation...
Best wishes,

can be normal during treatment
My liver enzymes have been slightly elevated all throughout chemo treatment and also during my current interferon treatment. There's "above normal" as indicated by the labslip results and then there's the level that your onc actually becomes concerned at, which will be different if you're in treatment. They can also be high for a while after surgery. Hope that puts you at ease a bit.
