Waiting on doc to call with date of mastectomy -- very anxious.

My husband and I have decided that I'm going to have a bilateral mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. While I know this is the right choice for me, I have been so anxious today waiting for his office to call me with the exact date of surgery. I'm at work trying to keep busy, but I have my cell phone in front of me and keep staring at it, willing it to ring. But I don't want it to ring in a way, because that makes the surgery seem so real.

This will be the 7th major surgery in our immediate family in the last year and a half (all 3 kids, my husband, and this will be my 3rd).

I'm hoping to hear, and I'm also hoping this is a dream, and I'll wake up and I will have never gotten my BC diagnosis.

Oh, Sherry, I know about that wishing for the BC diagnosis to be nothing more than a bad dream! You've already endured so much over the past 18 months or so . . . you must be wondering when something *good* is going to come along!

You've made one of the toughest decisions, though, and in some ways, one of the most challenging aspects of this diagnosis is already over; at least, I found that once I'd made the decisions about treatment, I felt much better, and maybe you will too, especially once the surgery is scheduled and done. Recuperation will bring its own set of challenges, but you sound like you are a very strong woman, and you will survive.

Strangely enough, I'm beginning to see my BC diagnosis as a gift--or at the least, as a cloud with a silver lining--I'm learning how richly blessed with friends I am, and I'm meeting new friends. I hope that will be true for you as well.

How old are your children? I have three sons myself--ages 26, 24, and 20; the two oldest are married. Has your husband fully recuperated from his surgery? When mom has surgery, it can really disrupt "normal" household functioning, so get ready to create a new "normal"!

Hi, Sandy. My kids are 26, 23 and 20; the two oldest are girls. The oldest got married this past July. Yes, my husband is fully recovered from his surgery (his was the 2nd out of the 7). He is incredible, and he's my best friend. He's been so supportive throughout this whole thing. He takes care of me, and I realize I am SO fortunate to have him.

I wish she would just call me so I would have a PLAN. I do much better with a plan. But my hands are shaking as I'm typing this, and I already took a Xanax awhile ago, so I guess this is as good as I'll get until I hear from her. Thanks so much for listening to me.

Sherry, I'm waiting for my surgery which is already scheduled for Feb. I'll be having a masectomy too but now I'm leaning toward just the one side, with no reconstruction. We all have to make our own decision as to how we feel and I'm sure you have made the right decision for you. This whole process seems to be about waiting for something and I hope you find out your date soon. Wish you the best. Let us know what your date is when you hear.

If no phone call today enjoy your Christmas with your family and the phone will ring on Monday with a date.
I had a bilateral with tissue expanders put in on my 45th birthday which was 2/2/09.

Holidays are stressful enough so relax and breathe. Enjoy the time you have with your family and then they can wait on you after the holidays. Make sure they help you.

I understand, the waiting is the hard part for me too. I haven't had my first visit with the doctor, that comes Jan 5. But I am going to try to enjoy Christmas and eat a BIG dinner tomorrow. Want to think about something other than "The Beast". Just do like me,, grab your husband and kids and hug them as tight as you can,, mine are my biggest boosters in the world. Thank God for families!! Try to have a Merry Christmas,, knowing that you have the ladies here and we are all going to say an extra prayer for you and your family!!!!
