edited March 2014 in Leukemia #1
My nephew who was just married on Saturday 11-28-09, has been saddened to learn (yesterday) that his new father-in-law has been diagnosed with leukemia and will be going into the hospital for 5 weeks of treatment. Now our family is not new to cancer as my father is a prostate cancer survivor and I am a breast cancer survivor. Being new to the family my nephew doesn't quite know how to help. In our family we have been very open and honest with our journeys through cancer, but the new family is new to this and I think just may need a little time to adjust. My nephew (god love him) is a former 10th Mountain Division soldier and a new Police Officer, so he is all about let's get this out on the table and how are we going to handle it. We are all new to this family but want to do whatever we can for them, how do we go about offering our support without invading their privacy?

Thank You

    Karilee's nephew

Karilee, I don't know any of you, but, unless there is somthing that I don't know and should, I'd say you nephew is apparently tougher than you might think. I would imagine that you and I know the crazy ways of cancer. If that is true then you must know that it is everywhere. How any one excapes it at all is beyond me ! Truthfully, I think you certainly did the right thing by seeking advice, but, honestly the key is education for both of you. Problem being: Education is harsh,... it's harsh reality. You have no choice in the matter, and, your "education" has already arrived in the form  of experience, so you should already know what I am talking about to a huge degree. Neither alone is enough. It takes both. Whether your nephew has began anything own his own is irrelavant, get together with him a help each other out . Helping each other through independent research is the deal. It is so hard to study this stuff alone that it's best help each other with what you learn separetely. This can cut a massive undetaking down to size ! So get started and good luck. I think both of you will find that the two of you are tougher and smarter than your my have ever imagined ! Oh,.. don't let any thing like a warped web site or me slow you down. Lots to learn about how to deal with this monster, but, you can beat it, leaving you almost feeling good about yourself ! I did. My life was spared against all odds for a reason ! That's exciting ! Isn't it !
