Balloon dialation of the esophagus

Hello dear wonderful friends here on the EC page!
I was just wondering if any of you or your family members dx with EC have gotten the balloon dilation done. My dad, Ray, dx with EC in Nov. 2008, will be getting this procedure done in the near future. Any of your input would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi,

    My dad was diagnosed about the same time. He's actually having a stent put in tomorrow. I've never heard of the procedure you are talking about. Did he already have the surgery? My dad isn't a candidate at this time, possibly won't ever be. It's a long hard road to travel. Right now his spirits seem pretty good. He's ready to get this stent and start a new fight with new drs. and new chemo. He's a stage 4.

    Thanks for responding Erika. No, my dad has not and will not be having the surgery. It will be too risky for him, he has had 5 bypass surgery, and after the chemo and radiation the drs. felt he would not do well. I have done research on this angioplasty dialation, it seems to be a lot like the stent.

    Let me know how your dad makes out with getting the stent. You and he will be in my prayers, and here is hoping you have a wonderful holiday weekend.

    I suspect folks have not really responded to much to what you are describing because the name can be confusing. I think most folks when they read angioplasty think of blood vessels. Basically, what you are talking about is a baloon dilation.

    The "angioplasty" aspect if I understand the literature and/or descriptions is simply because they are using angioplasty baloon/s & associated materials(i.e. made for vascular dilation) in the esophagus. Thus, it is baloon dilation of the esophagus. I hope this helps others to relate so they can discuss with you their experiences personally or on behalf of their family members.

    My husband Al had his surgery almost 6 weeks ago and already has had one dilation of his esophagus, and I'm pretty sure when we go to the Dr. on Wed. he will be being scheduled for another. I really is'nt that bad and I have been told that he may need to have them from time
    to time until new pipe is fully healed.

    Its just one of those things that comes along with the territory.

    William explains every thing in such detail that I don't need to go over it. I thank God for
    both him and Loretta.

    Thank you so much for answering my questions. You are both so helpful. I am now going to print your responses so my dad can read them. William.....you are the best! Ever consider writing a book on cancer survival? We are praying that all will go well with this balloon dilation. Still waiting for UVA to get back to us about the appointment.
