Remembering A Loved One

Here is a little something I have done when I have lost a lost a loved one. I start a memory page in my journal of special thoughts of them. When I lost my mom I noted how soft her skin was, how as I child I loved to watch her pin curl her hair, for my sister it was more sister type memories fun things we did as children and how she we always called her the hostess with the mostess. It's nice to go back and read the lists from time to time and occasionally something will pop in my head that I will add. It is a good way to recall things we may forget as time passes.

My sister took all the home
My sister took all the home movies my dad had taken over the years and put the reels onto VHS tapes. These were all silent of course and my mom and dad were watching them as they were being transfered and made comments about who was in the pictures or what they were doing or the name of the place. When DVD's got popular she copied the VHS tapes to DVD's and now we have the visual memories with their voices.

Marcia that is a wonderful gift to have. We did that with some old video from my husbands family. We are working on ourside now.

I love reading your post; I lost my Mother to Colin Cancer and my brother to Lymphoma and here I am now with NPC. But in all this I find that God is right by my side and there is not a day that goes by that I walk alone.

I am sorry for you loss, I certainly can relate. I agree that in all I have been through my Lord has walked every step with me. I do miss my loved ones, however I am comforted with the knowledge I will see them again someday.

I absolutely love your idea. How do you get them transferred from tapes to DVD's without it costing a fortune?

My sister did it all. I'm not sure what kind of equipment it required. She had to be able to play the tape and record the DVD. She made a copy for all the siblings. The problem is DVD's don't last forever either. We had one from about 8 years ago that went bad. Maybe we should copy them every so many years to preserve them? Maybe it depends on the quality of the DVD?

When our daughter, Emily, died on March 10, 2003 at the age of 24 after a 7 month battle with ovarian cancer, I just wanted to hide in a corner and cry. Her college roommate invited me to come to our local Relay For Life and be with her family's team. My wife and I decided to start a team in Emily's memory, and it ended up to be 4 teams of 15 people each. We're down to one team now, but we raise over $10,000 every year (usually with 10 people.) More importantly, the Relay For Life got me connected with the advocacy team in my state (Wisconsin) and I now am a volunteer state lead ambassador, travelling to Madison and to Washington DC to push for cancer legislation. And at every opportunity, I share Emily's story of courage and determination. Emily had to remain a fulltime student in order to stay on our health insurance policy, a fact that may have decreased dramatically her chances of survival. The day before Michelle's Law was passed by the US Senate, I shared her story with our two senators. They voted for the bill, and it passed 52-39 on September 24, 2008, and became the law of the land on October 9, 2009. I've shared Emily's story at Relays in SE Wisconsin, at a Gilda's Clubhouse fundraiser and at various womens' cancer functions. Emily's one goal in life was to make things better for someone every day. Her life was cut short, but in her memory, we carry on her daily goal.

For those of us who have
For those of us who have loved or known a cancer patient, we know how much more is involved than just the medical side of things. At NYC based charity Team Continuum, they aim to provide immediate and vital, non-medical, assistance to cancer patients and their families where the diagnosis results in disruption, hardship and uncertainty in their everyday lives.

In an effort to raise money for their amazing cause TC will raise money from their team participants running in the upcoming ING NYC Marathon in November. If you couldn't get into the 2010 ING NYC Marathon, I am here on behalf of Team Continuum with 300 guaranteed spots!
