follow up colonoscopy question

ok - so, last year the tumor and resection. then the chemo. then the follow up colonoscopy. so, that showed 5 polyps, and as I said before, one was a bad one. the doc thinks he got it all, but tattooed the spot and I go back in 6 months to check it again (gosh I hate gatorade).

here's the question - shouldn't the chemo have gotten rid of the bad cells? It's been 4 months since the last treatment I would have thought that nothing should be there right now. so, does that mean that i am NOT NED?

....if you still had cancer cells in you, that that would be evidence of the disease still being there. NED would be not even polyps or any kind of diseased cell being there?

I hope you don't have anymore of those bad cells in you Sheri.

were the polyps on the other
were the polyps on the other side of the resection? Ones they couldn't get to due to the tumor? (with my follow up colonoscopy the surgeon was anxious to view the entire colon as she hadn't been able to up to that point)- if so, I would think finding any polyps would be normal, in that they were there before resection. The one bad one and your question shouldn't chemo have gotten it? No, that's why they remove them. And are you NED? Depends on that one bad polyp and what the doc meant by saying they would watch it. See, with mine all the polyps (there were 4 and then the tumor, making 5) were before the tumor, several were small, one was quite large, but not cancer. Sounds like yours were on the other side?

2 were on the way in (newly developed), 1 in the middle, and 2 at the end, one of which is what he called the cancer causing one. I would have just thought that the chemo would have taken care of that. On the other hand, maybe it was bigger before I got the chemo...who knows. I just don't see the onc until december now and was curious to see if anyone else may know.

NED......
As I interpret it...NED is No Evidence of Disease.....A polyp is not considered Evidence of Disease if it is benign (no cancer cells detected when checked by pathology) so simply the finding of polyps are just that , and that is why screening is so important, find them before they turn into cancers and remove them...There are pre-cancerous polyps in which to me are not cancer but not far from becoming cancer. Then there are the cancerous polyps in which case have been detected, sent off to lab to be checked for carcinoma then sent back to the colon Dr to then the results are passed on to the patient whether or not they were cancer or not.....In my opinion your colon Dr should have the results of the polyps in a week or less and you should know straight up whether or not it was or wasn't......I would call him to determine one way or the other what it tested....But thats just me.....Good luck to you...Clift

Buzzard - time for me to do that. At the time I saw my onc, he didn't have the results yet, and saw my primary just the other day, and she didn't have them either. I didn't get a copy of the pathology report, only had what he told me while there to go on.

Mags - there wasn't even a SUMMER! And, while I am glad I am not on the chemo this time around, my hands and feet still bug the daylights out of me, so I guess there won't be any snowball fights this winter either. No, I hate the winters here, way too cold, would rather be in Alaska! Yeah, and Nick is still trying to talk me into Minot ND!
