UNBEATABLE! --- The BC Musical (now with working link)

Yeah, I know it's a pretty weird premise. A musical about BC?

But if you go to www.unbeatablemusical.com you will find just that. Lisa and I have not yet been to see it (UNBEATABLE! opens in St. Louis on October 15), but her radiation oncologist, Dr. Taylor has. She thinks it is awesome, uplifting, and even a laugh riot at points. And who are we to dispute Dr. Taylor?

There's no need to give away the plot, because everyone here is all too familiar with this particular plot from real life experience. While I realize the great majority of you aren't planning to be in St. Louis any time soon, perhaps UNBEATABLE! will do well enough there to go on the road somewhere closer to you. In any event, I strongly urge you to head over to the UNBEATABLE! web site and check it out.

What an unnerving title, though, both musically and psychologically. Hope all is well and that Lisa is getting stronger everyday. I have a copy of Gogol short stories from our library, but my daughter nabbed it first. Thanks for the recommendation. Both "The Nose" and the "Overcoat" are in it. Is your syllabus on-line? sounds interesting, and why not a musical? My mom, sister and I went to see Menopause the Musical when it was in LA and I thought it was great, even though I hadn't had that experience yet. Maybe they should put the two in one billing as most who go through chemo get hit with the meno too (as I did).

I'm actually in St. Louis right this minute.. sure wish it was playing now.. maybe hubby and I can come back for that one in October... could always use a laugh... it will have to be on a weekend though.. depending on how things go...that will be right about week 5 or 6 of rads... I finish the 27th.... so.... maybe another future road trip!

Dr. Taylor said the song about chemo, nausea and vomiting is particularly clever, and the BC survivors in attendance were laughing hysterically. But she herself couldn't laugh at it because she had only experienced these things as a physician.

Maybe Meet in St. Lous
Hi, Taleena, I'm not sure when we'll be going. If you really do decide to go to St. Louis and see the play, Joe and I would love to meet y'all. I have felt so tired for so long that I forget when the rad fatigue actually kicked in. So, I am not sure how tired you can expect to be in the fifth-sixth week or whether you would be up to a road trip.

p.s. The play is based on the journals of a breast cancer survivor. She is doing well and has graduated to annual checkups only. I didn't think Dr. T would recommend a depressing play about bc, but I made sure and asked her. I don't watch movies with sad endings!

That would be wonderful to meet in St. Louis!! And to share watching it with a fellow survivor with emphasis that it is you & Joe would be fantastic.... Well here's hoping the zapping doesn't suck up all my energy!!

I checked it out and
I checked it out and listened to several of the songs. I thought they were good. The Pharmacy Song is humorous just from the prespective of drugs and their interaction. Even someone who hasn't had chemo or cancer can relate to being advised to take a drug for nausea and then reading the label and seeing that nausea is a potential side effect. I would definitely go see it if it came out here somewhere. But I am sure some will object to treating this as a musical. For my, finding the humor in any situation helps me cope. And I think that the songs seem to convene what does go on during this journey. I think that the problem with this musical will be people like your physician feeling that they can't or shouldn't laugh at it because they haven't experienced it first hand. I had friends laughing when I told them about my coffee cups taped on me to protect the guide wires for my lumpectomy. If something is told or sung and it is meant to be humorous then laughter is appropriate. But your physician is so close to all this and I am sure felt awkward laughing. I thank you for the link.
