Started on Fluorouracil (5-FU) today and I have to say I'm surprised.

I read how some people have had real bad side effects from their treatment and so I’m really surprised that things have gone so well so far. There really have been zero side effects. Of course, this is just the first treatment and things can change. My treatments will be once a week for six weeks and then two weeks off and then repeated for a total period of 32-weeks. So, perhaps the side effects will kick in later, but so far so good. Have any of the rest of you had this kind of good experience with Fluorouracil, and will it last?

Side affects vary with different people. I did not have alot of side affects with 5fu but I will tell you the more your body is exposed to chemo the more your body gets worn down. I started feeling it more toward the end but never anything severe. You may be one of the lucky ones.

    Side effects
After taking Oxyl for four treatments and almost dying from it, I was real glad when the doctor just put me on 5FU and Avastin. The day after chemo, I'm real nauseated and for a couple of days after I'm tired, but I get over it quicker after each treatment.

Good luck, Cessna, and hope you'll stay side effects free.

    Ah, things will probably
Ah, things will probably change, so be ready. I never had issues until the pump was dc'd and the first treatment, no side affects. And then from treatment 2 to treatment 8 I was hospitalized 3 times for chemo reactions. I was really sick. I would recommend taking each day as it comes and realizing it could change pretty quick.

The first one is the easiest
Not to burst your bubble but the first one is usually the easiest one. Things have a way of building up. I wish you the best and I hope it stays like this for you

Were you on both Oxaliplatin and Flurorouracil or just Flurorouracil? Also, how do you add a picture to your posts? I've read through the guide but haven't been able to figure that out. Perhaps I already have chemo brain. :)

    No Oxy ?
    Hi Cessna,

Glad you aren't experiencing any side effects yet. It is my experience that the chemo is cummulative. I was on Oxy also so don't know about the effects without it. What stage are you?

Will be praying for you. Hope you continue to be side effects "free".

    God Bless You,

    5FU Vet
    Hi,

I had 5FU and Leucovorin given by injection once a day for a week and then 3 weeks off-then repeated over a 6 month span. I found there was a point - usually the second week after the treatment that I would get quite tired. I managed to work through most of my treatment but did take the odd day off to rest. Near the end of treatment there were a couple times of real exhaustion but my onc said this may have been due to treatment I had for Hodgkins 20 years ago. I believe everyone is different and have heard of folks just sailing through it all. I wish this for you.

    Cheers,
    Lance

Guess they didn't think I needed the Oxaliplatin.

    My understanding is that 5FU
My understanding is that 5FU is the one chemo drug they have used for years for cc, and was the only one for a spell. Then they added oxil- which is a nasty, butt ugly drug. It maybe is due to your staging at 2A that you are NOT getting oxil, your onc wanted to save you the side affects. This is a huge blessing btw, no oxil. My 9-10-11-12 were without oxil and it was a huge difference.

Thanks for the input -- and here is a side question.
How do you put a pic on your post? Haven't been able to figure that out.

If you go to the top almost left of the page, you will see "CSN Home" then go to the 2nd columnm (About Me) and then underneath "About Me" you will see view/edit buttons... go to the "Edit" and then you will find a tab that says "Picture" you can browse through your files to upload your pic, hope I found this right for you :)
