I am feeling pretty **** with bitten off finger nails and gray roots hanging out. All I can say is my husband must really love me. Anyway, I have heard fake nails are not wise but I don't know why. Also, I know I cannot use a heavy duty hair dye but what about a temp. rinse?
I would appreciate your input. Thank you

Jennie

    up to you
Jennie, my chemo nurse said hair loss is accelerated by scrubbing at the scalp, elastic bands, perms, colors, etc. The doctor told me not to color during chemo and I haven't. I have continued to blow dry and curling iron my hair almost every day and I use combs or headbands.

My roots in the back of my head are coming in DARK. VERY DARK! The front is almost 90% pure white and I don't mind that at all.... but that dark hair with blond ends looks like some of those rock stars. EEK!

My hair has grown really fast during chemo. It's thinned but no one can tell, and I'm like Kim and have baby fine hair. Can't wait to color but cannot figure out how I'm going to get the back to lighten up enough to blend in with the front. We don't have the funds for a beauty shop 'do'. Hubby has cut 10" off for me over the last 7 months.

My fingernails are like steel! Before chemo, menopause had caused my nails to become thin and peel. They're growing so fast and really are strong. Maybe it's the platinum in the chemo. LOL

Check out those short term hair colors that wash out after 2 weeks, etc. There's also some rinses in a bottle that you squeeze over your hair each day. Not sure if they work well or not. My grandmother used to use a lavender shade on her solid white hair.

    Yup Baby Fine
Diane has it right, I have very baby fine and thin hair and I have been tossing this question around on this board since May. I have used Loreal Preference before and its getting to the point where I don't even like styling my hair anymore because when I do it I still see the roots and it makes me feel like cancer has taken this away from me too. I'm really not a vain person either, probably wouldn't bother me so much before but it really does now. I would go someplace like "Sallys" and ask them for a gentle hair coloring. Let me know what you decide.

    Nails and Hair
Nails: I have gotten the fake nails on occassion, but have found out that it makes my real nails weak and thin, so I stopped getting fake nails. The chemicals and methods used are not really good for your real nails, but they do look nice.

Hair: I have been blessed with thick hair and did not have an issue with thinning or loosing my hair during chemo, but I do get my hair highlighted and permed about every 6 months (twice a year). During chemo treatments, I was told by my care team not to perm or color my hair during treatments due to the harsh chemicals.

    I would say
    Hi Jennie,
I would say to ask someone who does hair about a rinse. I know they are gentle and wash out over time. Maybe run it by your onc too because it is still color. I gave up fake nails a long time ago. I loved them but found that when I got stressed I would pick at them too. Not sure all the stuff in them are good to bite off either. The fake nails do make your real nail weaker. At least they did mine and some other friends of mine. The smell of the stuff they use for the fake nails may not be good for you either.
I say file yours down put on some pretty polish on and try not to bite them. I know it's darn hard. As for your hair ask about a rinse.... Hat maybe. I am thinking of letting mine grow out. I can't stand roots either.
You are beautiful Jennie. Just by your post I can tell that. Take care thinking about you.
