Ode to Breast Reconstruction

It’s surgery day at last;
Last night I had to fast
Today I sit and wait
While pondering the “girls” fate;
Will they be twins once more?
Just much smaller than before,
Goodbye my lopsided friend
Hope you’ll be much perkier in the end.
Here’s to bras where both sides fit the same
And no more neck and shoulder pain!

Although to some this may seem vain
Or who’ll think more surgery? She’s insane
But so many parts of me got lost
As part of breast cancer’s cost
Just want for once to feel like me
Or the me I think I use to be
I hope the sisters will understand
My escape from CancerLand
For I have paid and paid my dues
And want to celebrate some good news

Don’t expect to see “my girls” on Oprah, You Tube or Letterman,
Just say a prayer they will stay healthy, and won’t go down this road again!
For I am a cancer jigsaw puzzle, still trying to make my new pieces fit,
And breast cancer came with no instructions on how to make sense of all of it.
So if I mourn the loss of how things use to be, I hope you’ll try and understand
The tears will pass, just give me time, and occasionaly hold my hand.
But for now, raise your glass and join my toast, til we meet face to face;
And help celebrate my happy news… I’ve just remodeled second base!

    Thinking of you today Ladydi1 please let us know how you are doing once you are feeling up to it. I enjoyed your poem, very nice by the way. I agree this darned cancer does not come with an instruction booklet, however it does make it easier when there are so many here who will rally by our side each step of the way. Prayers are going up for you!

    Hugs,

    HOOOORAY !!!!
    Reconstruction you so deserve,
    To re-claim your matching curves
    Your "girls" will be
    Breast Cancer free,
    So,celebrate with verve!!

    It has been wisely said,
    That excitement can feel like dread~
    Your pulse may race,
    There's a blush on your face,
    Relax~ let your ego be fed!

    You are beautiful as you are,
    Your Spirit's a true delight,
    May your surgery show,
    What we already know,
    That you fought and you have won the fight!

    CONGRATULATIONS!!

    Keep us posted~ and may you be exquisitly happy with the results! Hooray for you!

    Hugs,
    Claudia

    We sure do have some talented folks on this board!
    Good Luck Ladydi with your surgery. And it should always be what you want, don't ever mind what others may think about you having reconstructions.

    welcome girls
    Keep us informed i have been thinking of this. Did you have a bi-lateral or just one? I wish i had them both taken and now am thinking of doing a mastectomy (preventive) on the other side and then reconstruction. I don't know if insurance will pay for it, and i wish i would have just had a bilateral to start with, but my surgeon wouldn't do it. I do know what you mean in your poem by neck and back-aches though from being lopsided!

    Lotsa luck and enjoy your new girls! jackie

    Wishing you the best
    I think you wrote that poem for me or about me or maby to me. Anyway it sounds like what I've been through. My neighbor ask me why I would have surgery when I didn't have to. I told her that I just did something for me.
