Question about reconstruction on radiated breast
I am a 15 year breast cancer survivor. I have just found out that I now have cancer in my left breast (it was the right breast before). I have a bazillion questions but the one on my mind today is am I no longer a candidate for implants since I had radiation 15 years ago?

Hi Go Bunny
I can only share my experience and hope it may help in some way. I had reconstruction on my radiated breast, after having a recurrence that required a mastectomy. A radiated breast may not always respond to stretching for an expander, and may need help with tissue from other areas of the body as in my case a latissimus flap procedure added the extra "oomph" for matching the other breast. So, it is possible, and consulting with a board certified plastic surgeon will give you information in helping you decide what is best for you.
Good luck.

Glad you found this blog,
Glad you found this blog, but I'm sorry for the reason. I think that you will find everyone very helpful, encouraging and willing to share their experiences.
I had radiation 9 years ago, and I was told that I couldn't have implants, when I was diagnosed with DCIS in the same breast earlier this year. Fortunately, I was able to have DIEP reconstruction (at the same time as my bilateral mastectomy), where they take tissue from your abdomen (similar to the tissue that's discarded in a tummy tuck) and use it for the reconstruction. The blood supply is reconnected under your arm. The key for this surgery is finding a plastic surgeon who is experienced in this procedure. I'm less than three months past surgery and am quite satisfied.
Hope this helps.

Welcome, GoBunny
Am sorry for your second BC - but, glad you found us. We're all here to support and encourage each other.
My surgery was lumpectomy, so can't specifically address your question regarding implants.
Best wishes to you.0 -

I had a lumpectomy too, so, I can't help you too much except that I have read where a lot of women have their breasts reconstructed after radiation. So, get a good plastic surgeon and keep going until you find one. Good luck!0 -

I had an implant iniatially on my radiated breast and it ended up becoming encapsulated. It was very painful and I still have problems with it. I now have tram-flaps. It is an extensive surgery and definitely not for the faint of heart but it worked really well for. Good luck.0
