Artificial Sphincters

I posted yesterday about being newly diagnosed and received some very useful information. It would seem the most often encountered side effect of the da Vinci operation is incontinence. I am a sports official umpiring baseball and softball in High School through College. I umpire 200+ games a year. An average game behind the plate would have me squatting 250-300 times and I can see where this would really cause a problem with incontinence. My life will change enough with surgery, but I don't think I am ready to give up the passion of umpiring that makes my life complete. I hope that I am one of the lucky ones that doesn't have the severity of incontinence problems that some have. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with the artificial sphincter implant process? This is a great site and I am glad I found it. Thanks to all of you who participate.

    I understand your concern and your seeking knowledge. But,if I may, it's way too early to even think about an AUS. Like you said maybe you'll never have to worry about that, but remember there are much less invasive procedures that are helping men with incontinence. Take it from someone who has had incontinence for 3yrs +. I am progressively trying all the treatments I can and the AUS is a last resort.

    The ADVANCE Sling is proving to be extremely effective against incontinence and is much less invasive. So after your surgery, if you are left incontinent and it persists more than 18 mos, by that time you would have talked to your UROLOGIST and will learn everything you needed to make the right decision.

    I do understand your concern fully though, being an umpire and being incontinent would be extremely challenging. I am an accountant and I will tell you it is challenging enough sitting at a desk.

    WHW--ONE MORE THING----THERE IS A DR IN NY--DR TEWARI--I HEARD HE'S DOING PROCEDURES THAT WILL ACTUALLY POTENTIALLY PROTECT A MAN FROM BEING INCONTINENT RIGHT AFTER HE'S DONE WITH THE RP---has something to do with when he reattaches the Uretha.

    You could always buy an external catheter with a strap on bag for your leg. Pour it out between games and hold off on fluid intake as much as you can. Practice your kegels.

    I had Devince 4 years ago, and the cancer is gown. But I had bad luck with side effects. Incontenent and ED. Most men do not end up like this, so take hope. Deal with the cancer and enjoy your live, but if the side effects come use the surgerys. I now have an penile implant and an autificial spinter. They both work great and live is good. The only reason I write this is to tell you if results are not what you want there are still options.
