Sticking with Chemo
Hey Girlfriend. All of us are or have been afraid of the treatment. I had my first Thursday before last and felt for days as if I were giving birth to octuplets. So, keep going and think of it this way: Giving birth is just the most awful pain ever and you swear you will never get pregnant again. But then that beautiful baby arrives and you completely forget how bad the pain was. Same with chemo. When that beautiful day arrives when you are pronounced in remission, all of it will be worth it. You still are a young woman and I know you want to live, and unfortunately, chemo is the best thing to prevent it from recurring. Grit your teeth, kick something, get mad -- but keep on going. Each time I feel like I can't stand one more second of the pain, I think of the gigantic ARMY of breast cancer survivors out there. If they can do it, then you and I can do it, too. I don't know what to say about the RX. I'm glad you got it, but I'm sure giving you someone else's prescription is against the law. I'd mention to your doctor the rudeness of the nurse. Where I go here in Austin, I am surrounded by a flock of angels. Honestly, I've never seen such a group of kind, dedicated nurses and volunteers. It is amazing. If I didn't have to look around at all of people sitting in recliners getting poisoned, I'd think I was at a spa. They even rub your arms and hands with lotion. Awesome. Keep your chin up; it is all we can do. - Karen0 -

Sorry your experience has
Sorry your experience has been bad. I was sick after chemo but just think you have one down 3 to go. Take one step at a time, get through the next one before thinking of the other 2 you have. My nurses are great and make getting the chemo fun. I think it is so sad you were treated that way. I get my bloodwork taken from my port everytime. It hurts a little but they can give you a numbing cream to put on it first so you dont feel it at all. It has to be put on 1/2 hour to one hour before they access the port. I did not get pain from the chemo, not sure if we took the same kind. I had naseau and they told me to stay hydrated, I ate a lot of Italian Ice to do this because I couldn't think of any drinks that sounded good. Hope you get a better nurse next time. Keep going, chemo is really your friend as bad as it stinks.

Wow,that kind
of sounds like the treatment center from hell! I have never been treated like that since being diagnosed-they aren't supposed to act like that! You've got a horrible disease that you didn't ask for,and like one of my chemo nurses said-they wouldn't be in that field if they didn't care about people! I would definately tell your oncologist about that one, that nurse sounds like at the least she needs an attitude adjustment!
Am sorry about your stomach pains, fortunately I never had them.I hope your treatments get easier to handle!
What is your insurance company?
Hoping that things get better for you!0 -

You have 3 more treatments to go, and, then you will be done. I can't understand what you
are going thru, but, I am sure it is awful. But, the chemo is killing any cancer that might
be left in your body, so, that is good. Please stick with it and finish your treatment. I
truly hope that you feel better soon.
And, you should report that nurse to your oncologist. Noone should talk to you like that,
especially not a health care provider in a cancer unit.
Wishing you the best of luck, Jeanne0 -
I was really sick also. The
I was really sick also. The nurse told me to keep something in my stomach and it would help. I found a cracker helped. The day of treatment I couldn't keep anything down either and they gave me a suppository. Ask a different nurse for help.0 -
Another Chemo
Hope and Faith,
I read your note about an hour ago, went to take a shower and got so angrey the I got out of the shower to respond. I will try to make this as clear as possiable but dealing with insurance is like fighting with a Hydra. I will also ask you be bear with my spelling it is rotten, I will get my name wrong with out a name tag.
Frist, your nurse. Pleas next time you see her comming at you ask for her suprvisor and make it clear in no uncertin terms that you will not allow her to care for you. letting her supervisor know your story. It is your right to be treated by a caring and compassionate nprofessional. Second the fact that she gave you someone elses drugs with out at least relableing them is such a huge HIPPA (federal privicey act) violation, and that unless she is nurse practioner, she is not licenced to precribe medication, I would think about reporting her to her state board.
My first chemo a year ago was very similar, differance is I am a nurse ( and a very outspoken one, and know that all of this is just wrong. I reported her and never saw her again until my last treatment a year later, she has grow and improved so much I again spoke with her supervisor and was told that she was given extra training.
Now on to the importent suff, drugs and insurance. All insurance companies have what are called drug teirs, this is level of drugs that will or will not be apporved and affets the effort to get them as will as your copay. The drugs on the higher teirs require what is called a piror authoristion ( SP). Call your costumer service number, speak with a PERSON, and ask for the pharmacy auth department. They will need all the information on the RX, and may need some informaton from the MD. They The nurse in your MD office can call or complete the paperwork and fax it in if you do not have the necessary informaion. Some times this can be done over the phone, some times a form will need to be completed. The costomer service rep should be able to point you in the right direction.
The second direction to take is to find out who make the drug and go to there web site, most drug makers have finanical assistance programs. You will need to provide finical information and will as the Rx informtion.
Now if you are not confused enough, I know that my clinic has social workers that help with type of stuff and well as a pharmaist who's job is to assist with drug assistance for the cancer center and our hospital. Start asking questions, and for help until you get what you need.
I will try to watch this site as assist as needed, but I work full time (Just not up to dealing with work today), and it may take me some time to get back.
good luck and I am so very sorry that you had to deal with that nurse, it make me ashamed of my profession.

Please do not be ashamed of your profession!! Do not let one bad apple define who you are and what you are doing. I too have been blessed with amazing nurses!! She needs to be delt with as an individual that possibly may have gone into the profession for the wrong reasons. I have actually spent my entire life never encountering a rude, or otherwise, nurse (please don't let statistics catch up to me!). I am so greatful for what you do as a profession and need someone like you. You sound like the standard of nurse (or maybe one of those that do go above & beyond!) that I have come to expect. That has been my experience with nurses. I personally knew the ex of a friend that was fired after she started making too many mistakes and became moody with patients. She was given a drug test due to the change in behaviour and tested possitive (sad to say, but it does happen). Her employers would never had know if people did not start complaining. So, yes please possibly help prevent a fatal mistake to someone else by reporting the incident but do not judge nurses as a whole from one individual. Thank you quail for your service and please pat yourself on the back for me for doing what you do in the first place. Pammy0 -
pain...
Hope, I am curious...have you been doing alot of vomiting after your treatments? I had a gastrectomy from a ruptured hernia done about 20 years ago. Because part of my stomach was removed, even though I made a full recovery (took 6 months to re-learn how to do a sit up!) I ended up with a lifelong condition concerning vomiting. I can not get sick without going into excrutiating pains from it. You see, as soon as my stomach muscles contract, they start pulling, and it becomes painful. This, I was told, is similar symtoms for people that have been vomiting for a long time (such as having a bad flu). You use muscles when getting sick that you normally don't use and they are contracting all at once. Also (this happened to me as well) you can tear your "paloric valve" (opening to your stomach) if you are having extremely forceful contractions or constant contractions to the stomach muscles. And this is VERY painful!! Ask your Dr if either of these are a possiblity. Not sure if your pains are all around your middle, centralized, or just in the pit of your stomach(possible ulcer...had one of those too!). Either way, there are meds that can help other than anti-nausea meds. As far as your experience, please report this nurse. You can report her in an assertive respectful way, however, her employer needs to be aware of her behaviour. How many other people did she treat this way who did not bother to report her and so she continues? I wish you the best of luck. Pammy0 -
Advice
You have been getting a lot of good advice already, so I can only agree with most here. You do need to be your own advocate, and don't let anyone talk to you that way. I had to tell my onc doc off a few times, only because sometimes they are so busy, we become just another body to them. We have to remind them at that point that we are an individual, we don't know most of what is happening, and we need a little more patience from them. It usually works.
Please do not let her be the reason you leave chemo. It may be a huge pain, but if anything can help reduce the percentages of recurrence, it has to be worth it in the end.
Take care and let us know how it goes for you

Sweetie please dont let anyone treat you this way again. You should be getting antinausea meds in the IV before the cancer meds. ASK your doc when you see him and tell him how awful
the nurse was to you. ASK her if she's giving you the anti nausea meds in your IV and if not, why not? I think it's pretty standard proceedure.0 -

Hey HopeandFaith! Glad to hear that you are going to another doctor. You do have to be outspoken sometimes in order to be heard. So, don't be afraid to do it! I do it all of the time. lol Good luck and let us know how you do!0
