I have a question that was triggered after reading a post on here about estrogen. The doc told mom that she has had breast cancer maybe one year tops... All of her mammograms have came out clear. He mentioned hormones and estrogen stuff. I can't seem to locate what he said in my notes.

Can the estrogen make it spread quickly? Mom seems to think her hormone replacement therapy has caused this. I guess I am just confused as to how the hormones affect breast cancer. He wanted to put her on FEMARA because of estrogen (I think...).

I hope this is not too confusing or I am rambling. Just trying to get things right in my head.
Thanks!
Kathy

Your best answer would be to
Your best answer would be to ask the Dr. Did you go with your Mom to her Dr.and take the notes? If not can someone else? At this stage we get alot of information and it is good to have someone there to take notes and ask additional questions.

I am on Femara and it is because of estrogen, but I did not start on it until all other treatment was finished.

I am sure someone on this board will answer more of your questions.

    Good Luck with her dx.

    Kathy, call her doctor and
Kathy, call her doctor and schedule another appointment to talk with him. You do need to get answers and her doctor would be the best one to get them from.

Some cancers are ER and PR postive which means they feed off of estrogen. So, you want to reduce the estrogen and eliminate it if possible. So, hormone replacement therapy would be a big nono for a breast cancer patient.

Best to call her doctor and go over this. Good luck!

    Hi Kathy,
    BC can be very

    Hi Kathy,
BC can be very confusing to understand, at the outset. So many terms and meanings to try and understand. I'd suggest that you perhaps do a bit or reading, online, before speaking again with your Mom's doc? That way, you may feel better prepared to understand his/her answers to your questions. I'd suggest going to a site such as: www.nationalbreastcancer.org where you can find reliable information about BC, written in easy to understand language. You may find that some questions for the doc come to mind while you're reading and can easily jot down those questions you don't want to forget to ask. Perhaps try reading a little at a time, until you feel that you understand what you're reading and then move on, after a break. Otherwise, info overload may get you! Hope that may be helpful as you continue to support and advocate for your Mom. (You can also google in "breast cancer" or "Femara" and you'll find quite a few sites to check out) A good book about BC was a necessity for me, early on in my diagnosis. I was fortunate to find one which had detailed descriptions of what the path report terms actually mean, the treatment(s), the fears, the issues, etc.. Everything from A to Z. There are many good books out there to choose from. Whatever else you do, remember: Every question you guys have is important and your Mom's doc should be agreeable to answering them, either in person or by phone. But only her doc can tell you what he actually suggested re the Famara and why.

Re getting rid of all the Estrogen in the body: It is my understanding that this is not possible; even with complete hysterectomy, (where both ovaries are removed) since the bodies adrenal glands also produce Estrogen.

All good wishes to your Mom and yourself. Perhaps she may like to visit this site at some point? I know she would be warmly welcomed.

    Love, light & laughter,
    Ink

    Kathy, sorry about your Mom.
Kathy, sorry about your Mom. But, you really should call her doctor and ask him your questions. Be sure and have them written down so that you don't forget. And, take a tape recorder along to tape what he says. I did that and so have several others on here. And, be sure and have someone with you also, 4 ears are better than 2. Good luck!
