Good Luck!
I had colorectal surgery and colostomy in Dec. '07 and am still here!! The first week will be a little rough but you will get better little by little and soon you will have the routine down.
There is a great site for colostomy people at www.uoaa.org; they really helped me adjust and I am so grateful for all of the info they provided. In fact, I now irrigate my colostomy and don't even wear a bag anymore. I wear a patch that looks like a band-aid and it does help in the self-esteem department. Maybe you could look into it when you are healed, but go to the site now and get some helpful general info to get you through those rough first weeks. You may feel down about your body image or having to deal with a colostomy, but it is not as bad as it seems. There are many options available to you and the important thing is getting rid of the cancer. So, fight, fight, fight!! And before you know it, you will be home and feeling better.
You're in my thoughts and prayers!
Much love,

you betcha!
You bet I'll be praying for you as you go in for surgery tomorrow- March 10. March 10 is my son's 16th birthday- can't believe it!
Anyhow, being nervous is normal- you WILL get through this. I'd definitely check out the website someone else posted about dealing with a colostomy. Interesting mention about the patch. I have a neighbor who's son had to have a colostomy a couple of years ago at age 18. He does not have a bag- he has some kind of internal bag, that he suctions out with some kind of vaccuum, instead of having to deal with changing an external bag. I don't know all the details, but that's what I was told. He had that surgery done at Scripps in San Diego. I'm not sure if he had that done originally, or if it was a subsequent surgery. Does anyone else know anything more about this kind of internal bag/vacuum?
Take care- there are many resources out there to help you if you seek them out- take advantage of them.
May God bless you and the surgeons, nurses, and others who are involved in your surgery and follow up care.

You will be in my prayers. Please take care of yourself and let us know how you are. God be with you and Bless you -
Thank you!
Thank you all! I didn't get out of doing the prep though. I called and they had me go get my potassium (?I can't spell today)levels checked since I was sick all weekend and that was good so I have to have the prep. Oh well. At least tomorrow at this time I should be headed to recovery. One area of cancer out of my body!!!! Then I just recover and get ready for Houston and the liver resection.
Honestly - I had to get up so much this weekend for the bathroom I though mmmmmm...maybe a bag won't be that bad! ( I know, I am probably digging for the positives...) -

And much luck to you, you'll be fine, and you have everyone's prayers with you. I've read so much about the bag here that I was silently thinking - hey - wouldn't have been a bad thing to have after my resection! -

Thoughts and Prayers
You are definitely in my thoughts and prayers. May God guide all the surgeons, nurses, assistants and all else involved in your surgery. What time is your surgery tomorrow? I will place you in a special Novena for a successful surgery and complete recovery. Let us know how you are doing.

Prayers are coming your way
I pray that all goes well tomorrow! I just had my colon/liver resection 2 weeks ago and I feel great! I know you will feel great too! Just remember to get right up as soon as you are able and start walking the halls!! 14 times around the floor was a mile so I used that as my goal.
Hugs and love from NJ...
