Life before cancer I was a gallery owner, gardening, weaving, reading, cooking and eating, travel (to Italy and around), I have two horses, love dressage although I have a very steep learning curve.
My husband, Arthur Norby,is a sculptor. He recently created a sculpture supporting this journey through breast cancer ... Renewal II (being cast in bronze). We strive to look at this in a positive way. The sculpture represents renewal, regeneration and rebirth. We will all come through this stronger and new women in many ways. I will have a totally new left breast! Hoping my hair will come in red and curley! I have a tough time right now staying positive on all this.
I have done my treatment at the Montana Cancer Center in Missoula. (Just beginning radiation.) We are planning a fundraising event for the Cancer Center. A percentage of the sale of each of these sculptures will be donated to the Cancer Center's Compassion Fund ... This fund helps individuals who can't afford their treatment.
Part of my healing will be this fund raiser. I believe in giving back ... in volunteer time, whatever. Today I'm working at a local senior housing place, fixing dinner for 8 residents. I need to stop feeling sorry for myself, giving some time to others, and getting out of the house, will, hopefully, do that for me.
I also have two cats ... Love my Kitties! An adorable doberman (75 lb. lap dog) and 3 chickens! I already mentioned 2 mares (Arab and Quarter Horse/Arab cross. The picture in the background is a portrait of my girls.) Love having animals, creatures around me. We have a large pond in our front yard that has trout and gold fish co-habitating.
My life in a nut shell ...
Wow diva I am quiet impressed with your husbands web site. Well not his web site but his art. It is beautiful. I also watched your video. What a sweet man he must be.

I'll be 49 next month, married 23 years, daughter 20, son 18, one loveable cat, one playful Boxer. I enjoy exercising at a local club, power walking and absolutely love my yoga. Reading is my escape. I love to entertain, cook, arrange flowers. I love live entertainment (plays, concerts), and camping at the beach. I'm fortunate that I like my job as a juvenile Probation Officer. While I love being with my friends I really enjoy taking "me time"...quiet, on my deck with a nice bottle of red wine and chocolate and being thankful.
Love getting to know you all better!

I shouldn't but hey what the hell. Add sunshine to that and I have paradise. lol

Hi I am so glad you thought of this. I also love getting to know everyone better. My life before cancer found me working full time. I am out of work now. I will go back maybe in
September. I work at an elementary school. I work with special needs kids Pre-school -2nd grade. It can be very challenging but also very rewarding. At times the kids can be very physical. (pinching, biting, punching, hitting) This is the big reason I am not working right now, the other is because it is a germ factory. So I am out for the rest of the school year. I am so looking forward to spring. I love the smell of mulch. call me crazy but it is something I look forward to every year. I also love all the flowers of spring. Last fall Mike and I planted about 300 different bulbs. Something I have done many times but was a first for him. We are both waiting anxiously to see the results. I love to spend time with my two daughters, ages 20 and 25. They have grown to become amazing women. I look forward to being a grama some day. My favorite thing to do is to take off on the motorcycle. I don't care where we go as long as we go. I love riding on the back country roads of New Hampshire and Maine. We have a vacation home in Maine so we put the bike in the trailer and take it with us. We spend alot of time riding in the good weather. I like to read, plant flowers and watch them grow. We were thinking about trying some veggies this summer. I like to eat. I like that way to much. I love the beach, something about those waves crashing in on the shore just gives me a sense of peace. Mike and I go to the beach alot. Not to spend the day in the summer(he is very fair skin and would look like a lobster) but just to take a ride. We even go in the winter during the biggest storms. You should see the waves then. WOW. We are very lucky, we can be there in about 15 minutes. I am also a cat lover. We have 2 cats. Oreo is 3 years old and Preshie(short for precious) is 9 years old. My oldest daughter has her own condo and she has 4 cats. One of which we borrow quite often. His name is Ray Ray (she adopted him after her dad died and named him after daddy) he is the sweetest most lovable cat I have ever know. She lets him visit us because my other daughter loves him so much. Oh ya I almost forgot I love Mexican food.Tattoos are way up there on the list too. One can never have to many. I told you I love to eat way to much. Well I hope you have found out a bit about me. One thing I hate is spelling it always makes me nervous when I post. imagine me working in a school and I am the worst speller ever. I have to keep the dictionary(I hope I spelled that right) handy at work. Nancy0 -

What I like to do? That is always an interesting question!
Well, I love spending time with my husband of 23 years. He was my high school sweetheart and can't imagine life without him. Our 2 kids are pretty cool to spend time with as well. Both teenagers and very responsible young adults. Mom getting cancer when they were only 10 and 8 made them grow up a bit faster than they should have. I love to listen to music. Classic rock is my thing. I also enjoy listening to my husband and kids play as a band. I play a pretty good tamborine I must say but they all play instruments and depending on how much beer I have consumed and who you talk to, I think I can sing pretty good to. I love relaxing in our hot tub with my husband. I love to travel. We have a second home in Arizona and go down there a couple of times a year. We have friends who live in Florida and travel there in April to attend a huge party they throw yearly. It is a very nice change at that time of year from the artic cold where I live. Quite frankly I am done with winter in January but I just can't convince mother nature to feel the same way!!!! Arizona looks better to me every year. I love to read inspiring novels, just can't seem to find enough time to do it. Love riding on the back of our Harley with my husband and going with our friends on group rides. I like to sky dive although I have only done it once (in tandum of course because there is no way in hell I would jump out of airplane on my own free will, but strapped to some hunky guy, OH Yeah!)I would do it again. I love playing games on my Wii system. I also do my workouts with my Wii. Like riding bikes with my kids, although motor vehicles have taken the place of the good old bike most of the time now. I am involved on the committee level with our local Relay for Life. It is time consumming but very gratifying. I am in charge of Luminaria Sales and the actual ceremony at Relay. Most of all I love the fact that I just celebrated my 7th anniversary of being Cancer free and God has given me a second chance at life. Fighting the enemy is a never ending battle. To all of you here that are fighting the fight right now, I say don't give up! You will get through this time in your life. As for myself... I will never give up until a cure is found and I know that my children or my grandchildren (lots of years from now) will not have to suffer with this disease.

Hi everyone,
This is only my second posting even though I first looked at the website and registered in Nov. I'm finished with treatment and trying to get back to normal. What do I like to do?
Reading, golfing (haven't done that in over a year), gardening, photography. We got a WII for my birthday in October and a WII Fit for Xmas and my husband and I try to do something on WII at least every other day after work. He is really good with the balance games. I still have some problems with numbness in my toes from chemo so I'm not as good as he is (or maybe that's just my excuse when he scores higher) I also love spending time with my grandkids. They are one 6 year old boy (Chase) and 4 year old twin girls (Payton and Dru) - Same family so lots of running around. I also love to travel and am trying to get to all of the states. I only have about 4-5 left but they are scattered around the country (Rhode Island, Arkansaw, Oregon) you get the picture...
My daughter got married in the middle of all this breast cancer stuff last year. Her shower was three days before my surgery and her wedding was five weeks after. But it turned out beautifully. She and her husband moved to Mexico right after the wedding for his job. Was supposed to be a three year assignment but they just got the word the company wants him to move to Spain. That will happen probably early this summer. So our next big trip will be to Madrid. Before that however, we are going to Disney World with our grandkids, their parents and the other set of grandparents. We figure with 2 adults per child that's a pretty good ratio. That's in June. Wow, I just realized in writing about traveling for a minute or two I wasn't thinking about this cancer thing. How great is that! So hello to you all. You sound like wonderful people who are great sources of support to one another!

I don't have any specific hobbies. I try lots of things and have a terrible habit of starting something and not finishing. I used to do embordery long ago. I started a lovely piece when my daughter was born. It has the first three letters of her name done and that's it. Same with quilting, but that must be genetic because I have my great grandmother's quilt that is only the top side. It was never filled or backed. It has been passed down from her to my grandmother to my mom to me and we all had good intentions but no follow through. Now my daughter has it but she it actually in the process of finishing it but if she doesn't she has a baby girl who can inherited it. I have have also started and stopped scrapbooking and sewing and geneology and many other hobbies. But while I did them they were fun. I used to tap dance. That I did for years. Started when my daughter was 4 and began classes. My mom took the classes with me. It is great aerobic exercise. Our studio closed many years ago so I stopped. I really enjoyed that and if I could find a good studio near here I would begin again. For fun, my hubby and I like to go to Yosemite. We never get tired of it. Also the ocean. And my best times are spent with my daughter, her hubby and my two grandchildren, Jazzton (4 year old boy) and Josephine (6 month old girl). My husband and I have been married 32 years and he is the love of my life. I couldn't have done better if I had designed him myself.
I love to read and watch TV and play games on the computer and come to this site, sometimes all at the same time. I used to love to play word Yahtzee with my mom. She lived nearby and I got off work at 3 pm and would stop by nearly every day and we would play. We didn't compete. Sometimes we would point out possible words. When she died, I used the letters from the game and spelled her name JACKIE, glued them together and put them in with her ashes. It is the last time I ever played. I couldn't ever play again with anyone else. She was the best mom and it is the one thing that has been hard during this. She isn't here. She was with me for my other cancers and she was so supportive. But I digress.
I have a very satisfying life and even with this cancer consider myself a very lucky woman. I have a good husband, great kid and grandkids, good family, a decent job and reasonably good health (and a good health insurance plan), good doctors and supportive friends and family. I have faith and hope for the future and I try not to borrow trouble. I always say, I don't care if my glass is half full or half empty, I'm just glad to have a glass. And I have good friends here online and that makes my glass currently spilling over.

For years my life consisted of nothing but work, and home, unfortunately in that order. I had a very successful career in banking, and eventually was able to partner with several knowledgeable bankers and opened our own bank. For almost 20 years this was my main focus, and my husband was second in my life. In 2001 I retired from banking, sold the bank and set us up in a very comfortable retirement life, choosing to leave the big city of Houston, and retire to Ruidoso, New Mexico. In 2004 we lost our only daughter, and I spent the next year in such a deep depression that my doctor finally recommended that I find something "entirely out of my normal, and get back to work". Because of my age, being a hooker was out of the question, so I decided to go to dealer school, and became a blackjack/poker dealer at a local casino in the area where we lived. This was probably the most fun I had ever had being employed. It was a job that was like going to play for eight hours. In 2007 we made a move from Ruidoso to Jacksonville, Texas, and one month later I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Now, I enjoy an occasional visit to try out my learned skills in gambling. Also my husband and I have learned to enjoy things like gardening (we are from the tomato capital of the world), and living on Lake Jacksonville has afforded us the opportunity to enjoy all water sports. All in all, life is wonderful, and I am really looking forward to enjoying this summer, hopefully feeling much better than last summer at which time i was right in the middle of treatment. My recommendation to anyone in recovery.....do what you think you would least likely have done all of your life, and enjoy every minute. I certainly am!

Hi, Tasha - I'm the local
Hi, Tasha - I'm the local 'starving artist' in this rural Texas burg. I also work part time for a local retailer doing gift wrapping, shipping and computer stuff. I have 2 dogs and my husband has horses. I'm also on a city beautification committee. We have raised funds and built a city park where some vacant buildings had been torn down. And we painted a mural on the side of a building that borders the new park.
I've had 4 rounds of A/C and 2 rounds of Taxol with 2 to go. But during the A/C when things got really tough, I started painting in bed - watercolors. Check out my website: http://www.wandererscreek.com and also my "chemo series" http://www.wandererscreek.com/chemoseries.htm
The folks here have been wonderful and quite literally saved my sanity many, many times. Thanks to all of you, Teresa0 -

Teresa, your talent is amazing. I have a daughter who is artistic like you. I guess she takes after my father and uncle, because I am certainly not artistic. I do love going to the museums and with my proximity to NYC I get to indulge in going to the MOMA and Museum of Art quite frequently. I have also been to the Prado in Madrid and Le Louvre in Paris. Keep painting. Hugs, Lili0 -

Not green eyes like you Melanie but mine are very blue. Wasn't able to pass that trait onto my kids. You certainly don't look like you have 4 children! I'm a Pisces, born on the first day of spring. I was able to convince my plastic surgeon to give me a birthday present... expanders out on April 9, implants in. And you are doing yours at then end of April? I'm thrilled but also very anxious about more surgery. any one else?0 -

Wow, your artwork is incredible, I love those horses' eyes. I have tried to be artistic but....well, my dogs always turn out looking remarkably like pigs, and my horses have the eyes of deranged axe murderers!
Thanks to all of you, Teresa
I really like the animal portraits, especially. Is the house you painted yours? It looks very peaceful and idyllic.0 -

Thank you for your kind and complimentary comments. Yes, the house is our little 1929 bungalow - or 'the money pit' as we sometimes refer to it. It was my family home and my husband & I are slowly renovating it. But we love being back here although there are challenges to rural living. LOL!!!
I've thoroughly enjoyed reading what other survivors are doing in their daily lives. They're so creative and resourceful - just love them! Each of us has to find our own path through this journey that's been forced upon us. Again, thanks to all of you, Teresa0 -

Wow, your artwork is incredible, I love those horses' eyes. I have tried to be artistic but....well, my dogs always turn out looking remarkably like pigs, and my horses have the eyes of deranged axe murderers! I think I'll stick to what I do best (when I find out just WHAT that is LOL). Hugs Jxxxxxxxx
Tasha, thank you for the compliments. There is no good or bad art - there's just art. You do what makes you happy and the rest will fall into place. XOXOXO, Teresa0 -

What an amazing talent. I enjoyed everything on your site for quite a long time..it took me back to a very sweet place. My mom was an accomplished painter..mostly oil paints on canvas. When she got the dreaded cancer she painted her most extrordinary work. Her last being horses running in a storm. Thank you so very much.
God bless

Jackie - so happy you liked my work. Painting is the ultimate escape, I think. And during times like these, you can really throw yourself into it. I plan to get back to the easel this weekend. Thanks again, Teresa0
