real-world better than clinical trials

I just watched a video interview clip from Medscape.com (free but I think you're supposed to be a medical doctor to sign up -- I lied). It was mainly about Avastin and colorectal cancer. But one of the main points made by the doctor interviewed was: the results which doctors are seeing for advanced colorectal cancer in the "real world" are much better than those reported in clinical trials and published studies in medical journals, etc. Even recent, well-conducted studies.

This is something many of us believe to be true already! But it was nice -- and heartening -- to hear this "expert" say so......(a Dr. John Marshall from Georgetown Univ.....).

    Lying? Or being proactive ?!
That is a good article, too, Mary.

Maybe we shouldn't use the term "lie" -- how about "taking an active role in one's health"?? Ha ha.

It is a good site and I find the articles relevant and written in fairly "lay" terms.....

Pharmacogenetics in Colorectal Cancer: A Systematic Review
    http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/584383?src=mp&spon=7&uac=
It's really long, but some interesting information. Discusses gene interactions with drugs like Oxaliplatin, CPT-11, 5-FU, Avastin, etc. No wonder we get such a wide variety of reactions and responses to these drugs. The future is in individualizing our treatments according to various genome characteristics!

This one discusses the use of Xeloda and CPT-11 as a first-line therapy for metastatic CRC. The printed version has some really cool charts too! :)
