I've never had a flu shot before. I guess I should look into it though. Thanks, Kit0 -
I got mine!
Not only did I get mine, I made my 17 year old son get his too. He has had one every year since he was 6. Why? Well, first of all, he has asthma. Flu could put him into the hospital and it would certainly sideline him from all activities for a month or more. His teammates on the track team would not be happy with that. But since I was diagnosed with cancer (he was 11 then), it has become equally important for him not to bring germs home that would sideline me. A flu shot for each of us is cheap job insurance. It keeps the bills paid. It prevents stress. It makes the holidays a bit brighter when we don't have to spend them going to the doctor or staying in bed with a fever. It protects my parents too who are both senior citizens. And yes, they get their flu shots. There are a few people that can't take the flu shot because of allergies. But if you have cancer, you don't need the flu. Get the shot! Also, if you have cancer, you have to go to the hospital or clinic for frequent checkups. All the folks you are around there just may have weak immune systems because of illness or chemo-related side effects. They need you to get your flu shot. If you haven't gotten yours yet, go get one. It is probably readily available at your oncologist's. I got mine this year for free at the pulmonologist's office. If you are going to the doctor's office in the next few weeks do it then, but you should really get it by the end of the month.0 -

Got mine. I was in the hospital for 1 week due to bronchitis (first they thought it was CHF then pneumonia) so they gave me a flu shot and pneumonia shot.
The good news, had an appt with my doctor and she said I don't have CHF, my heart is working fine.

Thank you all for your support.
By the way Joyce, I'm scheduling the bandage dressing change for my PICC every Thursday at 5:00 p.m, so I will get to see you. Vicky said that would be fine and the Fridays that I get my infusion they will change the dressing then.

I'm glad to hear that
I'm glad to hear that everyone have had their flu shot or will be getting one.
I went to the Dermatologist yesterday. I have a rash in my right hand, this is the side of my mastectomy. The doctor gave me two prescriptions and some samples of Cetaphil lotion and cleansing bar. Has anyone had this problem before? I 'm sorry to get off of talking about the flu shot.0 -

Are we meant to have one?
Hi Julia: Yes, you should get one. We tend to have compromised immune systems while going through chemo and immediately after. On top of everything else we have to worry about, it might be better not to have the flu. Hugs, Lili0 -

Great of my "Care" team not to mention that one. Anything else I need to know? I can't believe what I am learning from this site that SHOULD have been told to me before, during and after treatment. Thank goodness for this help-line (and all you helpful people out there) Thanks Julia0 -

Yes, I learn a lot from this site too. My husband recently suggested that I ask my doctor a question. I told him, what...I'd rather ask my friends here! Much broader perspective. Joyce0 -

Julia, depending on age and health some people also need to get the pneumonia shot. That is given every 5 years especially if you have had pneumonia before. Also, if you are going through treatment now, stay away from crowded places. I went through this last year during the holidays and I would do my shopping early in the morning when the stores were less crowded. I managed to stay healthy all winter long. Hugs, Lili0 -
