Neutropenic fever

Started chemo on 8/29/08. On Day 10 I had a temperature of 100.3 and white blood cell count of 200 (less than 500 puts one at moderate risk during chemo). Patients with neutropenia - abnormally low number of WBC (neutrophils) - are suspectible to infections so I was hospitalized for 3 days for high doses of antibiotics by IV. I never felt ill during this time - a fever was the symptom. Fever came down fast but WBC took 3 days to get to 500 so I could be discharged. Oncologist will give an injectable drug after next chemo to help prevent in the future. Anyone with a similar situation or know more about this problem?

    The exact same thing happened to me after my first infusion - 10 days to be exact too - except my fever hit 103. I never felt sick. But, I was hospitalized for 3 days and given injections of neupogen. Then, they prescribed one injection of neulasta within a few days following the remainder of my chemo infusions. So, I had my chemo on a Friday and my neulasta shot on a Monday. The neulasta worked. I felt a little achy a few days after the shot, but nothing horrible. You should do fine, too. This is not highly unusual as you will see from all of the responses you will get from your posting. Good luck. hang in there. Hugs, Marilynn

    yes, had it too, on my 3rd infusion, exactly 10 days after. Just had the fever and a headache, admitted myself to hospital and stayed for 2 days , they popped an i.v in and gave me antibiotics twice a day until my white cell count improved. Felt fine apart from extremely miserable. The chemo is bad enough without having to put up with infection. Had Neulasta shots the next couple of times 24 hours after each infusion, this made everything ache but it does give you peace of mind. Good luck and take care, Tan xx
