Hi Carrie,
I had an allergy
Hi Carrie,
I had an allergy to Oxaliplatin, which was discovered the first time I had it during infusion. I got all itchy & broke out in hives & my lips got swollen. They stopped it, pumped me full of Benadryl & steroids, then proceeded very carefully. My subsequent infusions of it were stretched out over a much longer amount of time & they had me take some oral steroids and Benadryl at home before coming in each time, also.
I did have two times of being at home, however, and feeling like my throat was closing in when I was trying to swallow food. It was kind of scary. I never called 911, because it turned around fairly quickly. So, I don't know if they could give you steroids/Benadryl beforehand if they feel like the benefit of the Oxaliplatin is still worth giving to you.
I'm now on my second time of having chemo & my onc decided to not go the Oxy route again. (I'm taking Camptosar, Erbitux, & Avastin now).
Best wishes to you-

I am getting allergy tested this coming week to see what my allergy is to Oxaliplatin, but it felt like I couldn't breath at all and was making funny sounds to get air into my lungs, very scary. How much longer did the stretched out infusion take? Right now I get it over 2 hours.0 -
Oxaliplatin pre-treatmentsMarc141 said:Benadryl
I've had three rounds of chemo myself. They infused high-octane Benadryl before the Oxaliplatin. At the UC Davis Cancer Center they do that as a precaution for just about everybody.
I remember getting Benadryl by IV prior to by Oxaliplatin infusions as well. I did wind up having to drop it from the chemo after 3 treatments, though, due to nerve and muscle issues. Mary0 -
