Cancer Returned

Hello, my name is andrew pease and I had been cancer free for two years following total thyroidectomy and radiation treatments. they found two new spots in my throat in the exact same area as my thyroid one is 1cm and the other is 4mm. I go in for ultrasound biopsy again, because my doctor screwed up the last biopsy and did not get enough cellular tissue. My question is this normal for Thyroid cancer to return like this in such a short time. By the way I am a 36 year old white male, so i am a rare case for thyroid cancer.

    the biopsy
    There are some hospitals that offer "on site" pathology teams that work with the physician during the final needle aspirations and biopsies. By having the team on site during the biopsy, they can tell right then and there if they have enough tissue. Perhaps, this could be investigated.

    Everyone who gets RAI except a few who get low dose have their cancer come back, the folks who don't have RAI do not usually have recurrence.

    Andrew, I am sorry you may be having a recurrence. But it is good that you are finding it.
    I also had a recurrence, a little less than 3 years from my last surgery for thyroid cancer. But they say it has been there a couple of years and probably then started back not too long after the other was removed. I had radiation also. But the new cancer wasn't being picked up on body scans or lab work. I had a lump and had ultrasound that caught it. The biopsy this time said that it is Papillary thyroid cancer but also has a subtype of Tall-cell, columnar. So I don't know if it changed a little bit or if they just missed giving a subtype last time. Tall cell is a bit more aggressive and grows faster. Mine grew back right where my thyroid used to be and then more spots were found also. I had 70 percent of my lymph nodes in my left neck removed in April and of course they took out the tumors also. I am recovering. I am staying positive. It sounds like they are keeping a good eye on you. That is good. You have my prayers. Best of luck to you.

    I have follicular variant papillary (FVPTC), which is somewhat more aggressive than papillary. I had a recurrence 3 months after my surgery (did NOT have RAI after surgery, just ultrasounds/lab follow-up). I had a 1 cm nodule and 4 mm nodule. I had RAI to get rid of it, which seems to have worked so far. However, I have some complications from the RAI, loss of sense of taste, continued salivary gland malfunction.
