DEAR ONLINE FAMILY,

THANK YOU TO ANYONE WHO RESPONDS!
Dear Friends & Family,
I hope all is well with you all; and that you all are safe, happy, and well always! ; )
This past weekend I got a call from Stu and he was pretty scared. Mom was refusing to take her medicine or eat. And lately she had quite a few falls, too. So, I called Stu to try to calm him down and let him know that I would be out there for most of the day on Sunday, stay overnight, and be with them to go and see the Dr. on Monday.
When I went out there on Sunday she was in her bed trying to sleep. She knew who I was but was confused on what day it was. She did seem confused and beside her self; and she was very unsteady on her feet.
Luckily, I was there to give Stu a break; he is really burned out, guys! So, I took over and tried to give him some time to relax.
Although mom pretty much stayed in her bed to try to get some sleep; things seemed to be going okay. Although mom isn't eating much these days either; but she still likes 'her sweets' so we still know that she's still 'herself' in that manner... ha! ha!. I managed to get her all showered and cleaned up the night before; so she wouldn't have to 'rush and hurry' to get ready in the morning since out dr. appt. was early.
So, Sunday night we put her to bed. Again, she got confused and ended up falling out of bed twice. We ended up putting a rail on the one side of her bed and slept with her to block the other side of the bed so she wouldn't or couldn't fall out. We talked for a while in bed and she 'finally' fell asleep.
Then, Monday morning we got up, ate breakfast, and were on our way to the dr. appt.
At this appt. on Monday, 6/11/07 mom's blood levels were checked and she was also checked by her oncologist. OF COURSE mom's blood levels were right on (because beside taking such great care of her; Stu is an awesome cook, too!). She, Stu,and I talked with the dr. about what had been going on with mom. He tested the strength in her legs and said that seemed okay.
He was concerned about the falling and confusion she was having; and immediately ordered to get an MRI. As well as, once she takes (3) cycles of this chemo pill (Xeloda) she will get another CT scan to see how it is working on her abdominal area.
Mom and Stu went for the MRI on Wednesday, 6/13/07 and received the results immediately. Well, the news was 1/2 bad and 1/2 good. The bad news was that mom has (3) tumors in her brain; but the good news is that it 'can be treated' with radiation.
So, this Friday we go and talk with the radiation oncologist to get this ball rolling.
I talked with mom last night and she sounded like she was 'still' in good spirits and told me that 'she was happy' that this 'could' be treated.
Otherwise, we're all just going to "keep fighting this thing" as long as mom wants to! I always, always, always tell her that we are all behind her 150% so...

Sorry to hear the news but one has to really admire your mother's determination to keep fighting and your family's care for her. Be sure to ask the radiation oncologist about what effect the radiation will have as far as her confusion. It may, at least temporarily, make it worse.

Mary, dearheart....
I wish I would have had a daughter like you when I was going thru my journey. This is a marvelous letter, not too full of reality to terrorize the family, but enough concern to make them realize that all is far from wonderful!
I repeat what I have said many times, you caregivers have the REAL wings....
Hugs,
Kathi0
