My mom went in for surgery on Wednesday. She had her entire nipple and surrounding area removed along with all of the ducts that run from the area. They also injected her entire breast and node(s) area with dye to see where the cancer went. They took one node (sentinel) to biopsy and it came back negative. They sad it doesn't seem that any other nodes were effected. Right now we are waiting for our next doctor's appointment. Should be this coming Wednesday. At that time they will give us the pathology report. We will know what stage she is in, what type of cancer it is, and what her treatment plan will consist of. We also don't know if it has spread anywhere else in her body. I guess we will find this out through other tests?!

Daughter,
Well the early results sounds good. No cancer in the lymph nodes. That typically means that it has not spread to other parts of the body. So we will hope that your Mom will get very good news on Wed. She may be able to avoid Chemo... and that would be great. Hope you have great news and that your family will be able to start focusing on the joy of your upcoming wedding... very soon...
Take Care.... God Bless....

They told me that they check the nodes to see if the cancer is the sort to set up camp elsewhere in the body. When the node turns up negative, it is great news. It doesn't guarentee that it won't turn into something yucky at a later date, but since the breast usually drains into that sentinel node first and nothing is showing there, there's a good chance that the rest of the body is okay. In fact, I was not even given the option of a PET scan or MRI at that time since my nodes were negative. They just said to report any worrisome symptoms, should any arise in the future. The extra tests were not needed until then. I will be thinking of you. Good luck at the doctors!0
