unbelievable and so sad

i work for the visiting nurses and our agency does iv cases. whenever i see orders for 5fu i take a closer look at the details. today we got oders for 5fu for a patient referred to us by chop (children's hospital of philadelphia). the patient is a 15 year old CHILD who's being treated for a recurrence of colon cancer. he was originally dx at 14! this poor kid lost 35 pounds over the course of 7 months, until he was finally dx. needless to say, i was stunned and so upset. my daughter was 22 when we learned she had stage 3c rectal and she is the youngest patient her medical team has treated. i can not get this young boy out of my mind. it turns out that we were not able to open him to services because he went back to the hospital for a port flush and was readmitted. i just had to "talk" to someone about this and i knew i could come here. old people's cancer??? hardly...... susan

    so sorry to hear that, my heart goes out to you. today cancer seems to hit just about anyone, young and old. sorry to hear that your daughter has had to fight the beast as well, i am a stage 4 rectal cancer survivor. the grace of god healed me.

    What I find sad is that there are still so many doctors who believe that this is an old (older?) peoples disease.

    I find it amazing that he was diagnosed at all considering the ordeal I had to go through to finally get diagnosed at stage 3 the day after I turned 27 (probably turned cancerous at 21ish from a polyp i probably developed at 17ish).

    Have you been screened, Susan (if you don't mind my asking)? I still can't seem to get my parents screened.

    tricia, i did have my colonoscopy although i waited until we got my daughter through all her treatment, etc. she is a twin and her sister had hers soon after jill was dx. we have a WONDERFUL gastroenterologist who did the procedure for free because she had no insurance at the time. i hope your parents change their minds. good luck! susan

    I am so glad to hear that you and your other daughter were screened. It is really wonderful that the gastro did it for free as well.

    I think insurance and not being able to aford the out-of-pocket is the main reason they don't. My parents own their own business and the insurance rates are way too high. I also think they still believe that they won't fall into this category. I pray that is the case. Tricia
