Neuropathy

I posted back in March about this and appreciate the responses then. My brother had undergone successful surgery for lesions on his liver from colon cancer. Things were looking up until a few days ago when a CT showed two small spots on the other side. He will see the doctor for recommendations, but is concerned about more chemo as the neuropathy in his fingers and feet is bad. Walking is painful and he says his finger tips feel like blisters. I'm just wondering if anyone has come across something to help or any words of hope. Thank you.

I have neuropathy from chemo treatments also. One thing that has always helped me is to wear shoes or slippers at all time. Also, I try to wear shoes that are not snug on my feet.My fingers are now back to normal and the feet are much much better. Don't give up--it is a small price to pay for the chance for another day with loved ones. I will keep you in my prayers.

I didn't have oxaliplatin - which is the chemo drug associated with the neuropathy. I will say this, though, everything I have read says that it usually goes away eventually - sometimes not completely, but certainly to a manageable level.

I can share with you that the pain he's feeling in his hands and feet will eventually go away after he finishes chemo. I equated the pain I experienced while on chemo to walking on rocks with bare feet. Once you stop the drugs, the pain subsides. I have permanent numbing in my hands and feet, but no pain.

Hi Its been exactly 1 year 1 month since chemo and I still suffer with my neuropathy. I walk like frankenstein at times and the pain and numbness in my feet are terrible. I spoke with my Dr. just this pass week and he told me that the pain and numbing vary with going away. My fingers numbing and tingling went away soon after chemo was finished. Neurontin made me sick so I just try to deal with it the best to my ablity. I hope your brother finds something to help him soon.

We went to the doctor on Friday and the Neoropathy was one of our topics (Oxiliplatin) he said it is a cumulative chemo and can do nerve damage. Usually will go away up to 12 months. He did advise us to take a B Complex vitiamin daily. Best of luck

Sorry to hear that your brother has some new spots and is facing the possibility of more chemo. I finished FOLFOX nine months ago. My neuropathy was not as bad as what you are describing. The neuropathy in my fingers has now completely resolved. But has not resolved in my toes. My oncologist thinks it might still improve, but could remain as it is now (which would be OK - manageable). I am taking vitamin B6 every day. I'm not sure if it is helping or not -- but cannot harm. I wish your brother all the best.

If he does get more chemo, they could avoid oxaliplatin and choose other drugs. Also, I have read that by infusing calcium and magnesium that the nerve damage from oxaliplatin can be minimized.
