Hi everyone,
Well, just want to let all of you know that my dad is NED for sure this time!!!
For those who are new, my dad was diagnosed last December with stage III cc, then restaged to IV in March with two liver mets. He has been on chemo since March (standard treatment-5-fu,leuco,oxy, avastin then switched to xeloda and avastin). In May, the two liver mets shrunk about 70% followed by what is now confirmed to be complete resolution in July, and now still NED. The doc took him off chemo. He said that since now we know for sure that my dad was already NED two months ago, there would be no sense in continuing to treat something that isn't there.
So the plan is for my dad to have his next scan in three months and we will take it from there.
The doctor did say that there is a very high risk for recurrence usually 6 months to 1 year after chemo, but then he said that he has had patients with treated liver mets that have never had a recurrence.
Now to my question... I scheduled an appt. with a naturopathic doc for my dad. I'm wondering if we should keep the appointment since my dad is currently NED. I want my dad to do everything he can to prevent a recurrence, and I'm thinking a naturopathic doctor may help him with that. Any advice?
I want to thank you all for your prayers. God is so good.
God bless you all,
-Lee-

Lee - This is great news for your Dad!
Next steps are hard to figure, but I don't see how a naturopath could hurt as long as you maintain a sensible attitude.
So wonderful again to hear your Dad is doing OK. I had liver mets in June 2005 and was negative in late August 29005 - negative ever since - tough we have upcoming October scans to worry about. Still, please know that things can turn out ok.
Good luck,

That is AWESOME!! Happy dancing for you and your dad...
As for your appt with the naturopath; I would definitely keep it - get clean and stay clean. Do it with every method known to man that's available to you guys. An ounce of prevention is worth another round of chemo or something like that...
Cheers

Hi Lee,
Congratulations on great results! I am happy for your father.
I think he should do all alternative methods to prevent the occurance, like diet change, naturopathic doctor, etc.
I am happy for both of you.

Hi Lee,
Great News!!!
Keep the appointment. Do everything possible to keep the cancer away for good.

Fantastic news, Lee. And don't slight yourself for your role in his healing. What an advocate you have been for him.
Without a doubt, keep the appointment. The naturopathic doctor will help him with ways to eliminate the chemo toxins while staying NED at the same time.
Congratulations to you both, Lee.

PET Scan
I spoke last night with the surgeon about the PET scan results. There is some hope but it is a long road. The scan shows that there is 1 cancerous tumor in my liver. This puts me at Stage 4 colon cancer. They could not get it out this last surgery because of the location on the back of my liver. That staging determines treatments. The plan seems to be go with 2 - 6 months of chemo and monitor the tumor. Does it shrink, stay the same, do others appear? Then schedule liver surgery to remove the area when it appears that the tumor has stopped responding. This would then be followed by another 6 months of chemo. They are doing it this way because it will show if the chemo has a response on the tumor and possibly all other smaller micromet's in my system that they can not see.
We do feel blessed at this time in that there were not more areas lighting up in the PET scan. That would have really limited our options. I am resolute in fighting this **** inside me and to try to survive it. Some days are great and I feel fine , other days and all the nights are very hard. I often cry thinking of the wonderful times and laughs we have all had.
My big days coming up are today at 4:00 in Santa Barbara, next Thursday with a different oncologist in Solvang (Dr Walker), and the following Thursday at Stanford Medical Center. We will get 3 opinions and then go with the one that seems most confident.
Please also keep in your thoughts, prayers and conversations my wife and kids. They are suffering as much if not more than I am. They sometimes feel helpless, alone, angry and sad. It tears me up to see them this way and there is so little right now I can do.
