Broken bone...will it mess up chemo schedule?

I fractured a bone in my left foot Wednesday night at the baseball game. I thought I had just sprained my ankle, and I was icing it and keeping it elevated. But, a few hours ago I had it x-ray'd, and I fractured a bone.....Now I have a cast up to my knee, and crutches, until I can get to an ortho doc. Anyway.....I was wondering if chemo had any effect on the healing process? It's friday night, and I can't call my onc, until monday....the doctor at the clinic didn't seem to know the answer....I was just wondering if anyone knew.....Hope you're all doing well...

Hi Mary -
Not sure what bone you fractured - I fractured my 5th metatarsal about 5 years ago - as I understand it, it is the most commonly fractured foot bone because it is so small and the tendon's "attempt" to keep you upright actually breaks the bone. So what bone did you break?
The temporary cast they give you in the ER is ridiculous for most foot bone fractures - normally the orthopedic doc replaces it with a simple "blue shoe" or a more elaborate "boot", but generally not a cast. And such fractures usually heal pretty well. Not sure if chemo has an effect or not, but given how easily such fractures heal, hopefully even if chemo does have an effect, it won't be much. I'd see an ortho doc right away - the sooner to get rid of ridiculous hospital temporary cast - and then ask your onc about healing implications.
Good luck. The pain should, with any luck, resolve soon.
