I'm so happy I found this discussion board. My dad was just diagnosed with Stage IV CRC with liver mets. Colonoscopy show almost complete blockage last Thurs and will have resection with liver biopsy this Thursday. Thanks for all your suggestions and hope. It is great to read of others with the same diagnosis. The stats on the internet were not encouraging and I'm glad there are others here to prove them wrong.
Thanks for all your stories. I'm sure there are many lurking around and just reading for positives!!

Terri,
My Dad was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer with mets to the liver and the peritineum in 6/04. The surgeon told my mother and I that he didn't believe my father would survive to see Christmas that year. Well he has seen 2 of them since then and is now starting his 3rd year of survival following diagnosis and is doing very well. That surgeon is friends with my dad's oncologist and every time my Dad sees the oncologist he tells him how amazed the surgeon is that he is doing so well. Statistics scared the hell out of me when he was diagnosed but I have since learned, through diligent research and the fine people on this board, that statistics don't mean a whole lot. They are outdated at best, and they encompass everyone with CRC. That includes people who are very elderly and people with multiple medical conditions. Each person is an individual and so is their situation. Send me an e-mail if you'd like to talk.
Best Wishes,

Good luck to your Dad (and of course you.) The surgery will be fine - he may actually feel better a couple of weeks out of surgery than he did before.
Let us know how it goes and you can find out more about Stage IV treatment here. I HAD liver mets - in the past for now - feel free to email on this site - and in any case please let us all know how your Dad is doing.
Take care,
Betsy
