I had my first treatment today, went better than I expected. I have my Liz Clayborne(sp) bag to contend with for the next 46 hours. So far I don't feel sick. Some posted on here that it comes later. I also ate more today than I usually do. This may all change with more treatments. I am on 5FU, leucovorin & oxaliplatin.
How many of you got mouth sores, and do the come on right away? Any info will help.

HUGS Glenda

    Hey, Glenda.
Count one for yes, mouth sores. Of course, if you read all the POSSIBLE side effects of chemo, I GOT ALL OF THEM (I guess I'm just a sensitive gal...sniff...hehehe).
I was on Cisplatin and 5FU. I didn't develop mouth sores until a bit after the first treatment. My taste went CRAZY about the same time, and I got a BIG wound on my nose. (WHICH, I might add, has not regenerated...sigh...just adds character to my face).
With my breast cancer, I got sores each time, but by then learned that non-alcohol mouthwash REALLY helped! All the mouth stuff disappeared soon after treatment stopped.
    Hugs, my brave soul!

I received the same treatment a year ago.

I never had any mouth sores, but my onc office was all about preventative and to be ready for any symptom or side effect. They said to rinse my mouth out every time I went to the restroom with a mixture of... hmm... hydrogen peroxide and water I think. I'll have to see if I can find my stuff from then to find the solution. I know I mixed a big jug before I started treatment and never ran out... but I never had sores either.

You know to be ready for anything cold? That was one of the biggest side effects for me (and most I think). Have gloves on hand to reach in the fridge and freezer or if it is a cold day. Drink room temp drink. Don't worry if you forget about the drink... the first drink of something cold will remind you forever :) hehe

Have immodium or whatever you use. Immodium is what my onc recommended. Have something for nausea if need be.

I'm sure you know these things, but it may help. I hope the rest of your treatment goes as the first.

    Hi,
I had 3 treatments of this and with each one I couldn't swallow cold drinks for 6 days and I did get somewhat tired after the pump finished the 5FU 46 hours later..I haven't had mouth sores but then I rinse 4 times a day with baking soda and salt as a precaution. My nurse from radiation gave me a print out about this rinse while on 5FU during radiation treatments. I am now on a break to gain strength before liver resection surgery May 17th...I hope you get through treatment without any problems. Sending you good thoughts also..Audrey

    H,
I am a caregiver for my husband and a dental hygienist - so when he was first diagnosed I wanted to be sure he did not have mouth sores with all his other side effects. He has had 7 months of 5 FU, leucovorin and avastin and has been on irinotecan and erbitux since 10/05. So far no mouth sores(knock on wood)-he does have a dry mouth which is also controlled. He uses Prevident 5000 Booster - from Colgate (ask your dentist)-fluoride toothpaste with lots of extra fluoride--good anti-bacterial effects and remineralization for the teeth - so no cavities either. And all the Biotene products(can find almost anywhere) for dry mouth--gum, mouthwash, toothpaste, and saliva substitute(oral balance). If you want more info on any of this-let me know. Good luck

So glad to hear your first treatment went well. I was on the same chemo. I did eventually get some painful mouthsores, but that was after my 11th cycle (out of a planned 12). I did use a mouthwash, which I believe helped. Good luck to you!

    Hi Glenda,

I'm doing folfox too and on my 4th treatment. I have had a few ulcers. I have a mouthwash called Biotene that helps. It is over the counter and really sooths the mouth. They have toothpaste too. I bought it at Rite Aide. I am a little tired after getting off the pump I guess because I have trouble sleeping with the pump and the steriods in the oxiplatin. I have the cold sensitivity when drinking/eating. It lasts the whole time but lessens as the week goes on. I also have the tinglies on the hands from cold. B6 helps that or B complex. I have the typical naucea and the runs. Like someone said, be prepared for everything. If you want to e-mail me here that would be fine. Good vibes your way that you have no bad side effects.

    Hi Everyone,
I just finished 6 months of Folfox and am now waiting 3 weeks for scans. I didn't have a problem with mouth sores or irritation until the 11th treatment. My doctor prescribed some wafers to suck on 5 times a day and that seemed to solve the problem.
