Switch health ins in NY

My question is about health insurance after being dx with OVCA. We live and work in NY state. My husband has health insurance through work and covers me. I want him to quit his job, but friends warn me about switching insurance companies with a "pre-existing" condition.

Has anyone had to switch? If so, did you lose coverage for cancer check-ups and/or treatments?

Thanks
