My father has advanced prostate cancer with a PSA of 160 with cancer spreading throughout his bones. He is currently on a lot of pain medication and weakening rapidly. His new urologist is recommending orchiectomy even though my father has been getting Lupron injections for 18 months. I asked my father's oncologist and he seemed to think that Lupron does as a good job as possible in shutting down production of testosterone in the body. If so, why is the urologist recommending orchiectomy? Any one else have any thoughts or experience?

Orchiectomy is supposed to be equally effective however supposedly having the advantage of not having to go for shots every 3-4 months since it's a 1 time event. HOWEVER, if your father is tolerating the shots well & is not financially constrained (medicare pays for the shots)I'd say stick with the Lupron. My personal experience indicates it works for me & I've heard many positive results as well!

Thanks Benji. After discussing it with several other doctors and researching it on the internet, my father has chosen to continue his Lupron shots.
