Reliability of thoracentesis

Just wondering if anyone out there has had this procedure done to determine if there was spread of cancer to the pleural space. My father just got this procedure done and the results were benign. Has anyone had to have this test more than once to prove that it was negative? Basically I am wondering about false negatives. Any help would be REALLY appreciated.
