Nutrition and Chemo Question

As time goes on my dad is having a harder time with his chemo treatments. It started off that if he had a treatment on Monday by Thursday he was feeling pretty decent. Then it got to where it was Friday or the weekend before he felt better and now its into the second weekend before he can get turned around which sometimes only leaves him about 4 good days before he starts all over again. Up till now he has kept his weight on real well but I'm afraid with his going longer periods of time with out having an appetite he will start dropping some weight. We've been reading about a persons diet and some things you should change while your on chemo. What does anyone out there recommend as far as a diet of foods while taking chemo. Also does anyone have any recommendations for what will help with the nausea....what are some of the things you have tired that seemed to help. Thanks

Hi Becky,
I am sorry to hear that your dad is having a rougher time these days. I am in the early phases of my current chemo regime, but I aware that things can get tougher as the chemo progresses.
There are a lot of different view on nutrition and cancer, and nutrition and chemo. To take a very simple view, may I suggest that you talk with your dad and find out what appeals to him. At this stage, it may be important to just make sure he is getting adequate calories. For me, when the nausea hits, there are some things I can "stomach" and some I can't. I tend to lean towards what I call "nursery food" -- simple things like mashed potatoes, cream of wheat, etc. And sometimes a certain brand of cracker....or breakfast cereal. Have you asked the chemo nurses? They sometimes have great suggestions. As for nausea, the thing that helps me the most is preserved ginger -- but again it can be very personal. Peppermint tea also helps me.
I wish your Dad all the best -- and please take care of yourself.
