My mother is suffering from malignant melanoma. She has to have surgery to remove lymph nodes in her groin. She will then begin interferon treatments. I was wondering if anyone knew the life expectancy for this situation. My sister and I are both expecting and I want to know how long my mom will be around.

Hi,
I'm sorry to hear that your mother has been diagnosed with melanoma. As my physician told me one day, this is a complex disease. There are no easy answers. My suggestion to you and your sister would be to educate yourselves on melanoma. There are books and pamphlets available that describe the disease and various treatment programs. Do a search on Amazon.com or Barnesand noble.com as a start. There is hope. You must be positive in your relationship with your mother and encourage her to follow her oncologist's treatment program. With two grandchildren on the way, your mother will have a strong incentive to complete the Interferon program. I wish you all the best. Bruce0
