What can nurses do to better help you?

I am an RN student and I would like to know what the nurses who care for you could do to better help you? I'm anxious to get your feedback! Please reply!

    Kitchell, you are going to make a "great" nurse, this I know because you are already trying to learn something that isn't taught to you from a book. I am a survivor of 1 year, the best advise I can give you is to listen to your patients. Learn as much as you can about post cancer treatment. Lymphedema, the tightness and loss of mobility, the emotional aspect are just a few areas that the medical field lacks in knowledge. I have experienced it and have had many dicussions that as soon as our treatments are done, (what ever they may be) we are on our own. So many times the ailments that follow treatment can be worse than the actual cancer treatment. Listen to you patients, learn as much as you can from the books as well as out of the books. You have a "big" heart, let it lead you in the right direction. Good Luck and God Bless!

    Show a smile each and every time. Even when I was almost a sleep with my eyes closed. One nurse would talk to me softly, not knowing if I were asleep or not. Just the sound of a womans voice was very comforting. When I would hear a man's, I was nervious. TOUCH! For some, you may be one of the last people they will see before they leave this place on earth, I went back to see a couple of my nurses afterwards. If it was not for them treating me as a person and not a number, I would not be here.
