I'm a 37 year old male, and I had a had a cyst removed from my neck a month ago, which turned out to be the result of papillary thyroid carcinoma. The surgeon wants to now perform a total thyroidectomy (fine), as well as remove the jugular vein and the sternoclydomastoid muscle on the left side (not so fine). He feels that the proximity of the cyst to the muscle and vein makes it advisable to remove as much tissue from the area as possible. Has anyone here had this done, and if so, what are the side effects? To what extent is the disfigurement from the procedure? What's the recovery like? Any physical therapy needed afterwards?
